New Graphics card + Power supply questionS

Hihi, got a Gefore 8800 xfx today, and I'm 99% sure my computer is underpowered to use a card like this properly.

I know that for graphics cards it's a matter of uninstalling drivers and then dropping the new card into the old one's slot , however for power supplies is it basically the same thing? Do I need to do anything else? Like is there a chance it won't fit in the same area as my last power supply if I get another one?

I have a strong feeling my power supply is only around the 300w region (never checked!) and will upgrade to 500w If it's not high enough.

With a power supply all you need to do is drop it in and make sure the leads are all connected to the right places, there's no software for them. For sizes, there's mostly just ATX or Micro ATX Power Supplies to go through, depending on the size of the case.

You live in Australia right? Just make sure the power supply you get is converting the correct amount of input voltage. It should be 240 volts for you as opposed to 120 volts thats used here in the states. You can change this with a switch, though more and more brands will automatically adjust. Regardless, make sure it's at the right setting or you could end up frying all your components. There are no drivers for power supplies, they're basically "dumb" components because they have no interface with the motherboard for reporting purposes.

The only other thing to worry about is putting too many things on one 12v rail, so if your power supply has more than 1 12v rail try to spread components evenly, and it'd be best to put the 8800 on a seperate one since it loves to suck up the juice.

As for size, they are normally the same but check inside your case against the dimensions of the new one just in case.

also, does the power supply put out enough to support the video card?
Some of hte newer video cards are really picky
- My 8600 GTS required 18 or 19 amps on 1 12 volt rail so i had to find a power supply taht would go more than what most typical support.
Otherwise your computer may shut off or bsod or somethign because the video card won't work properly

install went good, but now I get worse FPS than my ATI. In whitegate, not @ AH, I'm only getting 12-18 fps. Where's that crazy nvidia topic that had driver stuffs? Regretting purchase now.

I'm sure someone will post their settings but if no one does when I get home from work (4:30EST) I'll post my settings for my 8800. I get a constant 28FPS no matter where I am in game.

I'd go for a single rail power supply, i had issues with multi rail psu cards and some video cards. The 850w multirail psu I had had more rated amps per line than my spare psu had on its solitary line and the Single rail psu was fine with it

Also sad to say it but, for FFXI ran fine @ 1280x1024 with everything on and things cranked up via regedits on a ATI 9800pro (5+ year old card). Laggy areas still lag even 5 years later on cards that require so much more power that we went from Powered from the slot to Molex, to Six Pin PCI-E, to a combination of Six and Eightpin PCI-e.

But I did notice things seemingly running better on ATI cards than the Nvidia cards I used.

new graphics technology is more likely to decrease fps in ffxi then make it better

EVGA 8800 GTS, works like a champ in XP, 29.2 fps even at whitegate ah* ('-')/

But FFXI relies a lot more on CPU time than GPU power, so if you don't notice an appreciable difference then it's time to upgrade your core components (mobo, cpu, ram). I had the same trouble when I just updated my gfx card; the card still wasn't top-notch, but it blew the old one away and it only bought me 2-5 fps in sparse areas. Crowds were still ohfuckno.

Remember that with FFXI, it's better to be running a faster dual core than a quad. The game is single threaded and won't touch your other cores at all, so the faster, the better.

Anyone have success @ 2boxing and maintaining a bearable FPS? I am trying to SCH 2box with my taru's ninja , and if I use a book or an enspell, fps takes a nosedive, and anytime my taru hits with an enspell, it takes a nose dive.

Sure, it's fine if I am single boxing, but dualbox is almost impossible with this card if there's people around me - or even monsters (ironic since I purchased this card so I can dual box with a smoother fps rating than my older card).

Is this normal? :
- With 1 screen , whitegate dips to 14 fps @ the AH with normal shadows on
- With 2 screens, FPS takes a gigantic nosedive regardless of shadows/environment

Driving me mad, urge to switch back to ATI rising fast.

What drivers are you using? Personally, I had the best experience with the 174.74 beta drivers. FPS was stable at 30 everywhere I went with that.

Honestly I was just happy to get Vista + POL + Windower to all get along I never even cared about the fps. But yeah my wifes computer runs FFXI much better and it is three times older than mine. If I actually played much anymore I might care but it works well enough for me. BTW my FPS once I leave WG maintains 28-29 all the time. And all my 2 boxing is done with a PC and my PS2 hooked up to my monitors PiP screen.

^ your links are broken. I'll post my driver I'm using when I get back home, I have tried a whole bunch of drivers so far and nothing's let my game run smooth. I know I tried the .17 but now I'm running the .25 I think (unsure, double check when I'm back home from work)

Oh, yeah, you need RAID 0 or a Raptor to get 5.9 on the HDD bench. Forgot about that.
