Low fps

Hi everyone, I've been having a problem recently with ffxi: from time to time the screen flashes for a second and after that the fps drop incredibly low (I'm talking 0.2 fps).
I have no idea what could be causing this, but if it's of any help I play on a laptop (intel dual core 2ghz, 1gb ram, Nvidia geforce go 7300).
Unfortunately any hardware upgrade is out of question at the moment, so I'll just have to find a way to deal with this, and hopefully you guys could give me a hand because it's really annoying going at 0.3 fps while in the middle of something...

something could likely be taking your processor for a stroll while it happens.

Check your task manager to see whats causing it while it happens in FFXI.

If nothing is, I'd recommend trying another video driver.

anti virus? anti spy? firewall?

what kind of stuff are you running in the background?

unfortunately you can be automatically placing blame on the video card... sound card could also do this, as could network, as could any other piece of pc hardware... you are using the pc and it hits a certain threshold of stuff and shit starts crashing... it happens basically you start out with "whats running in the background" then you start disabling stuff, anti virus, other stuff like that other programs... then you can start with video drivers... but if it still happens after you update those, you have to start disabling hardware... start with sound... then go from there...

does this happen in other games? or just FFXI? (or do you even play other games?)

Nvidia cards are having problems with FFXI so make sure you install the latest beta drivers.

nvidia doesnt drop you to .3fps, and its not that generation of cards anyway only 8xxx+
