It's the media. They want attention~ "Slain" gives a stronger impression, and "killed" is being use way too often that it doesn't have the same attention from the readers as "Slain" ?

Slain is more powerful and catch people attention, but it's also more accurate in this case. This word is used when the victim is defenseless, which is probably the case for something like this.
