    Starship Troopers thread

    http://warhistorian.org/images/stars...s_large_05.jpg

First off, I'll point out I never read the book, however I followed the movies, the animated shorts and the (2) PC games, and I wonder, where the hell did this 'series' go?

The first movie was awesome, throw a platoon VS a swarm of giant fucking bugs, and it showed human resilience against a over whelming threat.

Second one showed heroism and sacrifice through overwhelming odds, and the key for the humans to fight back.

Then the third. Spirit? Religion? I'm confused where these came out. They play on the humans fine, but the bugs being an species seeking knowledge? Using religion as a weapon? Interesting, sure, but I thought the whole back message of Starship Troopers was that humans were the villians, and bugs were the defenders?

Or am I reading too hard, or am I looking at the picture wrong?

I swear I knew this shit forward and back, but now, I'm as lost as Lola on that fucking planet in #3.

When did a third movie come out? I always loved these movies, cheap and easy fun with not much to think about. Kinda like those Tremors movies.

Starship Troopers is quite possibly one of the worst "adaptations" of a book to the big screen ever done. In fact, it barely even qualifies as an adaptation. It was originally going to be a generic B-movie named "Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine", but they decided to license the rights to Starship Troopers and make a "real movie" some time after production started. They butchered the story, changed character genders so there could be a love triangle, totally removed the "mobile infantry suits" (which were basically mecha) and took out all the themes and subtext that didn't support a generic action movie.

The sequels and spinoffs are based on that shell of a story, so it's no surprise that they're inconsistent and trashy. The theme of the book wasn't at all that either side were "good guys", but that both sides were engaged in senseless violence. It was also full of social commentary, much more thought-provoking stuff than the short bits of news coverage and propaganda stuff shown in the film. Pretty much all of that was lost in the movie, or twisted into the exact opposite of Heinlein's intentions.

I remember that the first movie was awesome for a 14 year old boy. Shooting, explosions, guts, mechanical hand, and boobs.

Years later I found out there was a 2nd film and quickly rented it. After that horrifying experience I think I'll just treasure the 1st movie through the eyes of a teenager and not bother with the rest.

The movie(s) are a travesty and should be burned. The book has NOTHING in common other than character names/locale. N-O-T-H-I-N-G.

Heinlein is STILL rolling in his grave over them, I just know it.

While I agree that Heinlein is still rolling in his grave and the movie had absolutely nothing to do with the awesome book, it was still a fun movie. Take starship troopers out of the title, change the names back and no one would really have reason to care, it would still be one of those movies like army of darkness that is just fun to watch.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

lol too funny, my bf and I saw a commercial yesterday, and were like "wtf there's a 3rd, when was there a 2nd?"

As to the book to movie. It's kinda interesting how they did the movie actually. When I was in college there was an actually SciFi english class. It was awesome since I had always read fantasy and wanted to try scifi but never knew what to read. I digress, but we ended up reading both Starship Troopers and a book called the Forever War.

When Heinlein wrote Starship Troopers there was a lot of controversy over it because the book didn't ahve any women fighters. He talked about how women had to stay behind to procreate n' stuff and felt if there was a galatic war where we could be wiped out as a species we would have to protect women and couldn't let them fight. There was also big issues saying that all the men in the book were homosexuals (which is retarded imo).

Anways this caused tons of authors to write similar books, to be like "a galatic war wouldn't happen like that, it would happen like this!" One of the more famous of these being The Forever War. Which had women on the front lines.

    Basically though the movie itself is very eerily like the Forever war. I think they wanted it to be more like that but put the characters and title from Starship Troopers because Heinlein is more known. ><;

I started watching the animated series at around 13-14 maybe? I had no idea there was a book at the time so I could have cared less about the story. All I cared about was the guns and the explosions.
