Why does every use a square background res, but a 4:3 or 16:9/10 foreground res? Sense this does not make.

But if you are building the world to 1024x1024, but only viewing 1024x768, isn't that wasted processing? Would there be a visual difference between 1024x1024 fore/back vs. 1024x768 fore/back, aside from the height difference of the window?
I think the idea is that the textures are built on a, let's say, 4x4 block. While changing the resolution of the game itself is nice (it fits onto your monitor), changing texture resolution doesn't work quite the same way, as you're now taking a 4x4 block and stretching it to fill a 2x8, or a 6x3, or some other format, and I imagine it'd just cause all sorts of ugly looking things.
