Phone company can on a warrant/authoritative request, you could also buy a phone recorder, or just use Skype.

If you got a tape recorder of anykind you can get a $3-$5 plug with a suction cup designed to record. they usually have them at radioshack.

    Wrong.
Depending on your provider the codes may vary.
For Cox Communications there is *59 - Call Trace - Records and traces last call and archives itself. Can be obtained via subpoena.

You can also call your provider and request a Call Trap be placed on the line. It can be in place for up to 7 days. It will record any and all calls made. Also can be obtained via subpoena.

In either case, contact local authorities and let them know you have been receiving an ongoing verbal harassment and threats from another person over the phone and that you have already had your provider place a call trap/call trace on the call and let them take it from there.

How "real" are the threats? There are times when it's best not to do too much. Yes having recordings would be good should you nee to take legal actions, but will getting some sort of restraining order set the dude off, or is he just blowing off steam and going to forget about things.

My aunt was in the same situation, and at first she was going to file for a restraining order, but decided against it. In her eyes, it wasn't worth the risk, and she chose the path of ignoring him. Mostly because she was truly afraid of what he would do if an order was placed against him. He was the type who would get instigated by this and sure, while it would be against the law to get near or call her, that wouldn't mean anything if he did and then did something to her. Instead she chose to ignore him and he gradually stopped being a presence in her life.

But again, this situation is specific, and the real question is how seriously does she take his threats.
