    Graphics error

I recently purchased a new computer and installed an nVidia GeForce 8500 GT graphics card in it. However, I now end up randomly having graphical glitches like below, which seem to occur at strange intervals after I start playing (5 minutes in, half an hour in, etc).

The drivers on the card are up to date, but it still keeps happening. Any suggestions are welcome.

You've said that your drivers are "up to date," but have you tried older sets?

Also, does anything like this happen in other games?

I haven't tried older sets, didn't know if that'd work or not. As for other games, I wouldn't know, as ffxi is the only one I play on pc (got the card out of the sheer fact that there weren't many other options to choose from at the circuit city I got it from).

Looks like what happened to me once..

Entered Dynamis-Bastok on a friend's charc and that kicked in about 30mins into the run. Never have had it happened to me since though, and I use Geforce 8600GT card here. Looks like the matrix coding to me...

It keeps happening to me, and it's not just the backgrounds or the characters, as my chatlog, my radar, everything will glitch out.

    Wow, that looks awesome, lol.

Definitely related to your drivers though... keep downgrading until it doesn't happen anymore. Sometimes the latest drivers aren't always the best.

Actually have a computer technician that's in my ls suggesting that it's due to my power supply, since my card's specs recommend a higher power output than my comp currently has. It cleared up what seemed to be an identical problem for him in the past, and it'd make sense for what's going on with mine.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't try older driver sets.

What power supply do you have? Even if it's not a 1000W PSU, it can output enough energy if it has more than one +12V rail and you don't use an excess of devices.

I tried an older driver set today and I still glitched out, though it was a considerably longer period of time after logging in before the glitch occurred.

Okay. Do you know what kind of power supply you have?

    It's a 250W power supply.

    Crap in a hat.

Yes, get a new power supply ASAP. Make sure it has multiple +12V rails. If you're looking for something cheap, Antec TruePower is good. As long as you're not running an incredibly demanding rig, around 500W is all you should need. Only go higher if you plan on upgrading again in the near future.

300W here, do you really think switching out the power supply will fix that? Also, is it possible that switching the PS will allow better FPS? Been trying to figure out what wrong with my comp for the longest time now.
    Quick overview of my specs:
    3.2 Intel Celeron Processeor
    512 mb Geforce 8600GT
    2 gig ram
For FFXI, everything is shot down. Bumpmapping Disabled, shadows disabled, models at the lowest, etc.

Not sure if anything else is really relevant to FFXI, but I get 5-7FPS during dynamis. Which really gets on my nerves, considering my stuff isn't that shabby and I still have shit animation rate. My god if replacing my PS will really fix all my problems I'll prob go out the next day and buy one.

If your graphics card isn't receiving enough juice, it can do all sorts of wonky things. You should always supply a sufficient amount of relatively clean power to your components.

Also, is it possible that switching the PS will allow better FPS?
Possible, since power problems can (as aforementioned) have many consequences, but:

FFXI is processor intensive. This is your biggest bottleneck right here. A new CPU would be your top priority; you'd get better performance with a nicer processor and a lesser graphics card. After that, get a new PSU.

    Holy shit.

250W power supply this day and age? I got a friend whose computer locks up because his 420W is insufficient.

Get a 600 at least with multiple +12V rails like the person earlier said.

Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.
