seeking a certain DMB album

I happen to have lost a CD (ok my entire CD collection was stolen from my car) that means a great deal to me and cannot (cough) be replaced. It was a certain CD by Dave Matthews Band that was later released in bastardized form as "Busted Stuff". If you know what I refer to and could help me out (and be willing to help me out!), please PM me.

I wouldnt say Busted Stuff was a bastardized form of the Lillywhites. If you listened to the sessions, everything sounded so depressing and gloomy. especially grace is gone and captain. i know this was right around the time Stefan's child died, so everything had a sad overtone to it.

Busted Stuff was a change of scenery and helped them get re-motivated. i just wish they had kept the lyrics to Grey Street and Raven the same as the Lillywhite sessions.

I know i have it around somewhere. id have to look for it though

My understanding is that Dave himself was going through a rough patch and frequently at the bottom of a bottle, and his songs reflected his depression. The rest of the band seemed to also be affected, so he went out to California and wrote the album "Everyday" in 10 days or something like that. Busted Stuff ended up being the completed version of the Lillywhite Sessions, and while the quality of the mixes are obviously better, I was really disappointed that JTR was not on the final cut, as that's one of my favorite Dave songs.

yea i know dave was going through rough times, and for some reason i thought i read that stefan's child's death was part of it (he was referring to the whole band being depressed), but wiki says the kid died in 96. can never trust wiki though

I call Busted Stuff the bastardized format for many reasons (I also own Busted Stuff)-

1. I liked the dark sound- thought it was an excellent encapsulation of DMB, finally matching musically what their lyrics have always been. Funny you mention "Captain"- probably one of the biggest reasons I want Lillywhite back in my collection as I prefer that version over almost all I've heard.

2. I loved the feel of an "unfinished product" as I think it also gave some wonderful insight into their process. As a professional musician (albeit classically trained) I enjoyed that a ton.

While I will admit that some tracks I prefer the lyrics of Busted Stuff, you must remember that Lillywhite was unfinished- many of the lyrics simply weren't written at the time of those studio sessions.

I read an article/interview with Dave several months after Lillywhite hit the internet in which he was pretty frank about it (lord only knows where it was from- that was what- 6 years ago?) calling Lillywhite and Everyday "Twin A and Twin B"...almost as if they were both came from the same writing sessions and motivation, but with vastly different outcomes. It gave me another appreciation of Everyday, and while Busted Stuff is the commercialized version and obviously must be considered the "more polished" product, there is a charm to Lillywhite that can't be matched.

In a sense, its like seeing a rough draft of a book from an author you love- you get to see a side of that artist you normally don't.

Agreed. For the most part, I like how it's evolved into Everyday, but #36 will always be better.

discussion like this has a way of doing that. Had a friend in college who was associated with OAR when they were doing most of their gigs in Columbus, OH, and did a lot of traveling around following DMB in the late 90's...as a result he had quite an extensive collection of bootlegs, and I had many of them.....all swiped out of my car (total of probably 70+ CDs, over 25+ were DMB, including all released albums except the dave and tim stuff, and central park). Figured I'd start with what was easy to request and go from there.

Thanks for all your help folks, looks like I'm going to get at least this piece of my collection back!

(oh and #36 is absolutely one of my favorites, heard it live for the first time probably in '01 or '02?)
