Survey: More Than Half of American Adults Play Video Games

Washington - More than half (53%) of all American adults play video games, with younger adults playing the most and game play decreasing as age increases, according to a report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

Eighty-one percent of young adults (ages 18-29) said they play video games, compared with 23% of those 65 or older.

While younger adults are still more likely to play games, among older adults (65-plus) who play games, nearly a third play every day, compared to 20% of younger players.

Pew also found that age plays a role in determining which gaming platform players prefer.

Game consoles are most popular (75%) among young adults, followed by computers (68%).

Overall, the U.S. adult gaming population prefers to play games on computers (73%), followed by consoles (53%), cell phones (35%) and portable gaming devices (25%).



Is anyone still embarrassed about being a gamer? Like in a job interview, when asked what do you do in your spare time, or what hobbies do you have? Do you say you play video games?

Yeah i'm still kinda embarrassed about it, unless I work with a bunch of gamers too. (like my last job 5 out of 10 people i worked with played FFXI.)

I tell anyone anything, im not a very private person. Like maybe during HS near 10 years ago I was a little shy about it, but what the hell do I care anymore? It's not a negitive sterotype anymore.

I just did a research paper on the positive and negitive aspects of gaming, and the reality is, as stated, video gaming is no longer what is was. It was starting to expand into a 'less nerdy' thing by itself, and then the Wii helped it imensily.

Not only are video games a great way to have fun socially, they are now proven learning and communication tool sanctioned by the US Gov as well as increasingly accepted in the medical field.

I would've guessed the number to be higher. I am never ashamed to admit to playing games. But what qualifies somebody as a "'nerd"? I had always been categorized as a jock, but I also play games at the same time. "Gaming Nerd" I guess would fit.

Of course. At least 80% of my job interviews have been with video game companies (the rest made non-game software, but close enough).

True story: when I started the research project I'm currently on, my advisor asked me if I played video games, I pondered for a bit but then figured honesty was the best policy. He looked right at me and said "That's good, people that play video games seem to have better hands with this sort of experiment."

That night I called my parents and gloated over how much time I DIDN'T waste as a kid playing video games lol.

Not quite 65 but my dad is in his mid-50s and plays WoW almost daily.

not old enough to make my point though. My mom is 65 next year my dad is in his 70. they were in their early thirties when I was playing pong n' pacman. So they really didn't grow up at all in the gaming era. Your dad would have been in his twenties so it's probable that he would have played around when video arcades started showing up. The 65 + crowd though really missed the mark. Of course they could be playing real games like wow n' shit but I still think it's probably not that high a percent and most probably meant like mindsweeper-type stuff. I admit I could be wrong though, it would just be very surprising to me.

Usually for people 60+ the closest thing to videogames they'll play are at casinos (video poker, video slot machines). Maybe a young parent/grandmother/grandfather playing with their kids/grandkids' console so as to teach the youngone how to move the little character on screen... tho I believe it's mostly games that aren't too complex and require no more than 10 minutes to learn "how to play".

Personally, I had my 60+ year old mom playing WiiPlay with me, but only because it had pingpong and laserhockey. I've somewhat noticed that most older adults arent into games... unless they were into them from back in the Atari/Coleco/Intellevision/Arcade (Pacman!) days.

Isn't there a WoW guild where you basically have to be over 35 to join? I remember seeing that mentioned on Digg or some blog.

I still don't get what the big stigma about playing video games is, no one I've told really makes fun of me, even if they do I could really care less >_>
