    Iphone and other Smartphones

So I've seen the iphone and played with it a bit and it seems cool and all. But I've seen more than a few people harping on them. Obviously, there will be Apple-haters, but what are some of the shortcomings of the phone? What about some other smartphones? I have a PPC6700 now, for comparison, which is definitely showing it's age, not to mention its about the size of 2 phones these days (and the battery barely lasts thru a long call, and my contract is almost up in a few months).

Both of these are pretty awesome non-iphone smartphones that provide functionality on a very similar level. I'm on sprint so I haven't the luxury of the iphone or the Storm, but that HTC is damned impressive (and doesn't require the raep unlimited plan).

I ordered a Storm a week and a half ago. I just received the shipping information today and will receive it on Thursday. I guess that doesn't help you at all.

The one gripe I've heard about the iPhone is that you can't send pictures messages. Plus the fact that it is on AT&T, which I've had bad experiences with. (dropped calls, poor reception)

When I read tech reviews of all the iPhone killers, the most common disadvantage is always how slow or glitchy their software is. (example: this review from David Pogue) The iPhone software is usually fast and responsive. Your mileage may vary. Another is no WiFi.

The biggest advantage those other phones have is usually text with pictures (MMS) or ability to edit MS Office files like Excel (iPhone can only view, not edit.) Another advantage is that some provide turn by turn GPS. (I think MacWorld might address this next month.)

And of course their is the keyboard thing. I won't list that as a positive or negative because some people think "ZOMG, how can the earth spin if there is no physical keyboard!!!" As you can tell from that last sentence, I'm in the other camp.

Edit: One other thing I forgot to mention: AT&T sucks. That is probably the number one reason not to get an iPhone. But again, your mileage may vary and hopefully you live in an area where AT&T is actually good or tolerable.

The biggest downfall of the iPhone, is it cannot run programs in the background, this prevents programs from working together, since you can only have one running at any given time, so it really hinders software development. Other than that, I can't think of any other big complaints which aren't simply due to preferences.

I second the suggestion for the G1 (T-mobile phone with Android, the Google mobile OS), because it's got a ton of potential and cheap.

Been with AT&T for like, 8 years now. Never had the slightest issue with customer service, service, anything. Only issue I had with dropped calls was a malfunctioning phone, which they happily replaced for free. With that said, I have a Blackberry 8820. I'd kill for a Storm, but it's verizon exclusive. Co-Worker has a 9000 and loves it. I've bought my wife a Palm Treo for christmas, but only played with it for about an hour. After I get used to using it, I think I'd probably like it more than my Blackberry.

I don't suggest the Iphone, the Storm is an amazing fucking phone like beyond comprehension(seriously its nice) but... The problem with the Storm is that you have to get the Media Package which is $30/month ontop of everything else you're already paying and that only gives you unlimited data and email...

My suggestion is if you want a good smart phone I'd go with the LG Dare... Oh wait I already did! Verizon+Dare=sex. The Dare is a really good phone in that it has great capabilities like the Iphone or Storm for the most part and its also on a great carrier. People often get scared off by the touchscreen phones but this phone can be callibrated to your touch in like 30 seconds which is awesome... I have huge motherfucking fingers and have no problem typing on it once I was used to it like someone does on a Voyager or other keyboard ready phone. The Camera on this thing is amazing 3.2 Megapixels(Only 2.0 MP on the Iphone) and the flash is bomb, nothing like lighting up a room of drunken friends for a good picture. I got my Dare when they first came out so mine didn't come with a Stylus but appearantly they come with them now so thats a plus for the drawing or handwriting part. Another cool thing is the MP3 capabilities of this thing, you can buy extra storage for it and load up on an assload of music. I definately suggest going to this site and looking at these specs and comparing it to the Iphone LG Dare : LGDare.net.

    Storm is terrible.

Sorry, it really is. But that's only because you are comparing it to the iPhone. It is nothing like the iPhone, not even close, you can't compare them.

It's just a typical blackberry, nothing special, with a shitty touch screen that you have to actually push down till it clicks. It also lags alot with bringing up things like keyboard and such, and the menu is pretty bad. Iphone touch screen is about 100000x superior, as a matter of fact, it's about that much superior in terms of touch to every device out there right now that isn't made in japan.

Dare is a decent phone, again, you can not compare it to an iphone though. Good thing about dare is that it's not a blackberry. Touch screen is gimmicky, storms is better if you like pushing down on it I guess, but both are pretty behind the times.

Are you looking for a touch screen phone? iPhone wins this by leaps and bounds. It's kinda sad there isn't anything close. Are you looking for the best smartphone? Then you'll want to drop 500-800 on a Nokia N97 or some other retarded phone like that.

Note: Just because Verizon or AT&T or Sprint or whatever is the best carrier in your town, at your house, or in your tunnels, does not mean it is the best at everyone elses. Verizon is superior in service in my area, but At&t was getting reception underneath police headquarters recently (full bars) which is a secured area. No fucking clue how.

I suggest an iPhone. I bought it a couple months ago, owned it for 2 days, returned it. Biggest regret I've had since. I'm trying to get a new one this month as my verizon phone just blew up kinda, only returned iphone due to not wanting to pay 100$ a month. With my discounts though I should be able to get it for 80, the only debate being if I want the best buy warranty which covers damage for 12$ a month (ouch). Iphone can't send pictures which is kinda sad, but I'm sure they'll eventually add that somehow. Good thing about the phone is that it's always getting new stuff, so you can't rule out that possibility.

The way I look at phones: I want a phone that barely is a phone. I want every feature but the phone. I barely make any calls, 15-100minutes a month tops. So all the other features are golden for me. No longer do I need to carry my ipod nano, I also get an alarm clock out of it since I have an iHome. The iHome is wired into my computer and surround sound system, something like a 100watt alarm clock lols.

Data costs the same no matter where you go, expect to pay 80$ min a month no matter provider or phone if you want to use all the features.

The Storm fucking sucks, and I'll just post a link and let you do your own research as to all the reasons why:

    Thanks guys.^^

I do generally use the touchscreen more than the keyboard I have now (I don't send a whole lot of text messages that need the keyboard). I also use it for non-phone stuff more (interweb/games etc), but rarely use the wifi over my unlimited data plan, just too lazy to turn it on and connect to an access point I s'pose.

Two latest blackberries are the Storm (Verizon) and the 9000 (Bold) (AT&T). The Storm is touchscreen. The Bold is more traditional, other than the OS, it physically doesn't look a whole lot different than an 88xx series.

What makes the Iphone so great is the App store and all it offers, no other phone can begin to compare to it. The Iphone doesn't drop calls nearly as much since the last few updates - think it only happened to me maybe once or twice in the last month. There are some issues w/ the email "push" feature... Apple claims it's not on their end, but after I reboot the phone I get push messages, and others times I don't after a restart. Maybe it's just a thing w/ my phone so I may need to bring it in to get checked out.

If the Iphone had turn by turn GPS or at least a GPS system that updated itself after you made a turn (idk about voice), then it would be a truely great phone. But when I use it to navigate, I always have to press it once to update itself after I made a turn & once again to center on my location. Have to do this after every time you pass a "mark" on the navi. It's not the end of the world, but it's not nearly as convenient as it should be. But the new satellite thing on the gps is pure sex.

If you get the Iphone just be prep'd to spend lots of money on app's lol... its unavoidable
