Simple question, disregard True Sight/Sound mobs, just think about normal monsters.
Think about that moment you thought you had sneak up but got aggro anyway.
Maybe?

I don't think so, I could have sworn I got aggro once as sneak/invis was just about to wear off.
So random too, could cast invisible four times before sneak ever wears off.
Edit-Guess it could have been lag thinking back on it now, who knows~
Great question. My personal belief is that there are certain mobs which are not true sight, but have a certain chance to detect you anyway. I've been doing Brothers ENM weekly for years, and have noticed this with Kindred Summoners in Ulegeurand Range. Most of the time they don't see you, but every once in a while, they seem to, even if there is no Molech anywhere near them to tip them off. And it's only ever happened to me with the summoners, not with the other Kindred wandering around that last area before Jormungand.Originally Posted by Shuemue

I have always wondered about this. The spells say that they "Lessen the chance of being detected". That would imply that they are not 100%. I have never experienced them failing however.
I've noticed once or twice where I felt it'd failed me when it shouldn't, I just wonder if perhaps it gives a 999/1000 chance of avoiding detection. After all, almost everything in FFXI isn't 100%.
I've encountered this on very rare occasions. Once in Riverne B01, a Malboro smacked me and took off sneak and killed me at the unstable displacement. Another time, when I was camping Vivian, I cast sneak on the opposite end of the tunnel (away from her, toward Aery, near the ledge with the Malboro below), then ran back, started casting Regen on myself and got drawn in. Took a screenshot of that 'cause it definitely pissed me off that I had sneak on.

The log is kind of deceptive in its order. Was pretty much: Regen -> Drawn in and smacked -> Sneak wears.
Edit: There was about a 10-second lapse in time between when I recasted sneak and casted Regen on myself. Here's a nice 2-second crap sketch of what happened.

And no.... Vivian is not a true-sound mob......
Edit-some-more: Notice I also successfully casted Regen, which is a semi-long-casting spell. If I had been aggroed during Sneak recast, my Regen would have been interrupted due to not being in the same spot I started casting it at, from being drawn in, or simply from being hit.
I believe that the it is designed to be 100% effective for mobs that aren't true sight/sound. I think the "Lessen the chance of being detected" is a reference to true sight mobs. I do think it's entirely possible for a person to get sneak up, but an error to occur somewhere and then aggro happens, so in that sense it's not 100% effective. Similar to mazurka mysteriously not working for a long time, then suddenly popping on half way through a zone.
I've always assumed it was 100% until it comes to coffer hunting in Castle Zvahl Baileys. Then there's always someone who gets aggro. When it happened to me there was no warning whatsoever that my buffs wore.
Just wanted to confirm the Vivian thing. I recasted sneak well out of normal sound-aggro range but got drawn in anyway. I chalked it up to Vivian having a larger "hearing" radius than a mob normally would, her being a NM and all.
i know that if you equip + move speed gear or hit flee while set to autorun, it doesn't change your speed till you break and reset autorun. is that possibly what you're referring to? i'm not familiar with mazurka just not working at all.Originally Posted by Ashokan
One thing my screenshot didn't show is there's a good 10 seconds between when I casted Sneak and when I started casting Regen, also.Originally Posted by Vlint
only thing weird i've ever noticed with sneak or invis is when randomly i'd sometimes only get 2 warnings that it's gonna wear off and then it's gone, but i chalk this up to being an issue related to either lag or the game clock messing up (similiar to how meditate sometimes gives less tp than supposed to)
always works fine for me
Hmm, never had meditate give less TP than it was supposed to... only more.Originally Posted by Pergo
Well, I have, but that was related to talking to NPCs.
Apparently if you talk with an NPC while meditate's tics are happening, it cancels the effect.
Also, with Sneak and Invis, all problems I have ever had were user errors (aka, I fucked up).
All of these contradictions are obviously detects by smell.![]()
I clicked no, because the game lagging, me doing complex things at 4am to me count as not 100% effective.
I have had it fail. It's extremely rare and only seems to happen once in a blue moon around high level mobs.
You know, for the longest damn time I never knew invisible could be casted over itself. I would always cancel it out mid-cast. Took me I think 60 levels before I realized that (I never had a real mage job leveled or ninja). I was kind of pissed when someone said "Dude...you don't need to cancel out Invisible...just Sneak".
But, Sneak is one weird spell. The interval from the final warning to completely wearing is far far shorter than invisible's, which is most likely due to lag for me. Weird thing is that it ALWAYS happens this way (I'll see third warning and then 1 seconds later it wears off, but for Invisible it takes about 5 seconds to wear off or longer). Vivian thing I can't account for, and it could be because he's an NM and hacks.
This will turn into another "just cos you havent seen it doesnt mean that it doesnt happen" topic, imo its 100% effective
