holy shit yes, one of the best mac games ever made.
I used to spend hours trading and flying around and exploring. I wonder if there's a version for pentium os x macs, I'd really love to play again.
Really loved this game. There was a sequal and numerous different edits for star trek and star wars that were enjoyable as well.
I loved this game up until i sucessfully made one of the enemy uberships my main one. apparently, if you do that, you can't turn or stop after a jump.... completely ruined the game
you mean the red alien one? Yeah, you're not even supposed to be able to get that.
no, i think it was the confederation's? (it's been a very long time, iirc they were grey with blue dots on them) largest military ship. at that point in the game it was either that black pirate ship, the rebal cruiser?, and that confederation ship were the strongest available. didnt even come across the red alien one, weren't the rebels the ones with the red ships?
I think so, I thought the aliens had purple ships?
I used to think I was hot shit going in with ResEdit and haxing my game so I could have a shuttle with infinite shields/ammo/lasers/etc, and they did have some great downloadable mods.
Apparently ambrosia software made 2 sequels, however neither the first nor the 2nd game is compatible with OSX. I seem to remember downloading some of Ambrosias other games and having a bunch of fun with those as well... maybe I'll download the trial version of the 3rd game tonight.
Yup, that ship was big slow and glitched. EV: O is a great game, albeit repetitive. The universe however is fucking huuuuge. EV: N was technically a better game, but the universe was probably smaller than the original universe and the story strings felt shorter and more confined. Not to mention they rope very sneakily you in early and once you start one line, it is impossible to go to another most of the time.
You can do what I did, I'm running EV in SheepShaver in Linux, I'm sure there is probably a mac emulator for OS9 and below.
I'd hate to bump, but this isn't that old.
EV: Nova has EV:Classic and EV:Override plugins so you can play the originals under Nova (aka on moderns Macs and PCs). In fact, these conversions have been around a long time. I registered Nova purely to play Classic and Override. Used to, and still, love these remnants of a slower Mac era (when we had to cling to awesome mac-only games)
EV Stuff
And aru, I know what you're talking about. You'd mod up an amazing Kestrel, pimp it hardcore, then take over a Confederate Frigate and expect the size of it to be amazing. Then you realize it has no good stats, just tons of space. Even tuning it didn't make it workable...
Yeah, i would have done it, but it is missing some aesthetics, (Read), They use the EV: Nova engine.
Very true. Of course, the best EV experience requires a classic Mac (with which you could play the other amazing Ambrosia games).
For the Intel Mac people, this package is a one-stop shop for getting OS 9 running on your mac ala Classic from days before : http://homepage.mac.com/jlg/COIV4.0.1.zip (It's preconfigured SheepShaver, ROM, and OS)
I haven't used it for EV Classic/Override, but I think I may give it a go later, definitely throw in Barrack and Harry the Handsome Executive.
As for how to use the Nova-plugin versions of Classic/Override, I don't know. On the Mac, you just double clicked the installer and you are done, hah.
