    Network card crashed?

Hey there. Last night we lost power, my surge protector didn't flip so I'm assuming that there was no power surge. However, today when we regained power, I can no longer connect to the internet on my main PC. I cant even really send you a picture of my problem.. On vista, it connects to the "network" but wont go online.. Just a red X. I've tried everything I can possibly think of to fix this but no luck so far. I'm a bit short on cash this week, and despite network cards being like $10, theres no way I can afford one right now. What do you suggest? Would this be my network card? Halp.

Note: I tried to connect in Linux, but it too is giving me an error which makes me think this is hardware, not software. I did change the mac address on my network card like 6 months ago but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Can you look in device manager to see if it's there?

EDIT: Failing that, Start --> Run --> cmd

    type in ipconfig /all

It'll tell you if it's there.

Also, plugging in the cable to my laptop (if I switch off wifi) works fine, so its not my cable or router.

    simple test to do

In windows right click on computer -> manage and go in device manager.

Uninstall the Card and Reboot. If it detects the card try to install it and see what it does.

If it does not detect the card then the problem is hte PCI slot or the card itself.

Talking about PCI, is your card is really in PCI slot or motherboard?. If it's on a PCI slot can try on another slot see if it works

It detects the card but won't connect. My neighbor offered me $20 for a card, if I buy one, do you think it will fix my problem?

I can't even get to my default gateway on that PC so its obviously stopping before it gets to my router. I can see the PC on my network but when I try to connect to my PC (Like, its shared folder) it says "Unable to connect, PC not found" or some shit. Is this typical of a network card?

Ask him if you can borrow it to see if you really need it.

    P.s. I miss you.
