would this be a good idea?

    http://www.staples.com/Antec-Laptop-...P1570:CL142670

    for my ps3.

gets kinda hot in my room alot but it's sometimes 75-80, occasionally the ps3 gets super hot but mostly it's only moderately hot and i'd like to be able to have it for as long as possible.

*edit* it should work just plugging it into the usb slot on my ps3 right?

Definitely not worth it. It won't effectively cool the unit.

There is custom hardware though designed just for this.

because it draws air away from the ps3 disrupting air flow or ?

all the reviews for people using it on their ps3 have been positive though. it's kinda confusing

I'd be more inclined to replace the thermal paste on my PS3's CPU/GPU before considering buying a 'vent' product for it.

Well with the PS3. Temperatures increase for internal components when it is vertical (not sure if you knew) by 15F. Horizontally the machine operates better.

If you wish to use the laptop cooler method. You can, just make sure your PS3 is elevated. What I mean by that is having it on two pieces of something holding it up. from the actual laptop cooler unit while it is horizontal. IMO it does not operate as effective as a third party cooler in the rear to remove heat from the unit. Which should be the first priority.

As for replacing your thermal paste on your PS3. I'm pretty sure on the earlier generations they used adhesive thermal compound. So its a dick to get off.

edit: One last thing, that laptop cooler in question is not worth 39.99 lol. You can make your own with some simple tools and materials. http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Laptop-Cooler/

Where'd you read on the 15F hotter thing?

I always figured it'd run cooler vertical (how I have mine set due to lack of desk space) since the fan pushes the hot air directly above and out the top vent, or is it more due to the positioning of the hardware creating the heat?

The test was done @ polygamia.pl. Was a year ago or so when they did the tests with an infra-red camera and some auxiliary temperature sensors.

Having it vertical means that even though hot air is escaping easier, it's also blowing over components that it wasn't before, thus resulting in higher tempatures.
