    Making FFXI look good help

I need some help with this. I'm wondering if it's possible to tweak FFXI to look better. I've turned all the settings up that i've found but I want to make sure I didn't miss anything.

    I have weather effects on.
    Shadows on high.
Background resolution is set to 2048x2048.
Texture resolution is set to highest. (Not sure actual number.)

FFXI still looks kind of shabby though, is there anything else I can do to make it look better? Also, is there any way to make it so FFXI doesn't cap at 30 FPS?

I'm running on a GTX 295 so i'm trying to make everything look as gorgeous as possible!

Um... thats about as good as it'll get. FFXI is capped at 30 FPS, and if you try to uncap that, you'll get jailed by the auto-jailer.

Beyond that, you need to remember, this is a Direct X8.1 game. This was released in 2002 for the PS2.

Just think what SE games looked 5 years ago (from 2002).

Ouch, that sucks. Doesn't the game look alot better on its console counterparts? (PS3/360)

    PS3 = PS2

360's resolution in standard definition is about as crappy as PS2. Its pretty good in Hi-Def though. (The resolution I mean)

But that's about as good as you'll get.

In your graphic card's settings, have you turned up Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering, and set them so they override the application's settings? Anisotropic Filtering doesn't need to be super high, FFXI only benefits from it so much considering the quality of its outdated textures. Also, are you using Vertical Sync?

There are some ways extra that you can do. You have caped just about everything i can think of. there are a few thing you can try.

1.) is your registry value for 0000 higher then 1 (caps ~6 best looking for distant textures is ~4)?

2.) have you looked in to the .dat modifications that are out there to glorify spell and ability animations? (Google is your friend here)

after these two things i can't think of anything else you can do. i persoanlly found the best way to get FFXI to look is to have 2048x2048 BG and then compress it to 800x600 (windower) and it looks pretty well.

You don't need to have FFXI's windowed resolution so small if you want it to look good. Look through the last several pages of the favorite FFXI screenshot thread, there's lots of huge but beautiful pictures.

Main reason i have it so small is so i can play FFXI + surf while staying in the FFXI window. that and i have grown to like it >.>

So how does setting the background resolution to 2048 x 2048 on a PC compare to the 360's resolution? I've never seen FFXI on a 360, so I'm just curious.

It's a hell of a lot better. 360 is ~720p res, no AA, etc. To me it's reasonably comparable to running the PC version on Intel GMA graphics or something. Running the PC version at 1920x1080 on my TV (as opposed to upscaled "1080p" from the 360 version), without oversampling, looks far, far superior...though the text is too small to read without sitting right up near the screen.

I'd cum bricks if SE ever decided to upgrade the engine, the way it was done with EVE.

    I have these problems...

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...82x/bander.jpg

Note, the slight camera rotation makes mobs and other area fauna vanish, when they should still be somewhat visible.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...82x/glitch.jpg

That problem I've always hated... the friggin' banner flickers on and off... there are other textures that tweak out sometimes too... Bastok Markets is by FAR the worst zone for this...

    I've had...

    - entire patches of flowers vanish off of a hill in the Highlands

    - glitchy patches of sand in Valkurm Dunes

    - glitchy walls in Castle Zvahl

    - randomly glitchy armor textures

    - weird horizon lines in some zones like Cape Teriggan

    - I can see the lights of several outposts before I can see the actual building.

    - I can see the Tunnel to Gustav (in Valkurm) floating on the horizon from that first forest patch coming from the Sand Bat Cave heading towards Selbina, but I can't see any of the terrain around it.

    - Various other effects.

What kills me is, I have two computers - one old and one brand new - and I get this on BOTH of them.

Any idea on how to fix this crap?

Bumping this, because I found part of the answer to my own question...

under "Performance & Quality Settings" the "Global driver settings" were set with AA at 8xS Anisotropic filtering at 16x and Vsync On. (Image Settings were also set to HQ, but I didn't change that). I also checked and there was no profile for FFXI.

I created a profile for FFXI and browsed for pol.exe and polboot.exe, then making that profile Active (selecting it in the drop-down at the top of the window) I checked all the settings above and then set them to "Application-controlled".

After saving my changes I loaded FFXI and walked around the AH in Jeuno. There were many more people visible than before, my weird flicker issue was gone, and people didn't wink in and out of existence as I would spin the camera around. As far as I can tell, it worked.

Now, I didn't spend too much time tweaking this out... I may have turned off too many things (Vsinc should actually help reduce flicker). So you may want to play around with some of these and see what works best for you. I just wanted my problem fixed... and it seems to be for now.
The problem is, I'm kind of an idiot with this sort of thing, and despite searching high and low, I can't find any such options on my system.

I suspect it's because the guy who posted the quoted bit had an Nvidea card, and I have an ATI Raedon HD 3400 Mobility.

Is there some software I need to download?

    Found it, thanks...

Played with the settings for a while today, and didn't seem to fix it...

Tried "Vertical Refresh" on and off - and it only made a slight difference... it didn't fix anything... I'm assuming VSync and Vertical Refresh are the same thing?

    Here are my current settings:

    Anti-Aliasing: 4x (Max Setting)

Mipmap Detail Level: High Quality (Max Setting)

    Anisotropic Filtering: 16x (Max Setting)

Catalyst A.I.: Advanced (as opposed to Standard, or Off)

Wait For Vertical Refresh: Always On

Adaptive Anti-Aliasing: Quality (other setting is for "Performance")

Adaptive Anti-Aliasing Method: Super-sampling (other setting is "Multi-sampling")

Support DXT Texture Formats is checked on.

Triple Buffering and Force 24-bit Z-Buffer depth are both checked off.

    ...any suggestions for this stuff?

Your best bet is to try installing an updated or different graphics driver. If the ati catalyst drivers arent working well there are plenty of sites that offer customized video drivers.

As far as Xbox resolution goes, I have played on xbox in normal and 720p and it really doesn't come close to looking as clean as the PC version. And once you throw in the fact that xbox is a freaking lag monster and everyone I know that plays on xbox has certain zones they don't even dare enter (jugner [S] durring campaign) for fear of DCing, If you want the best image you can get, stick to pc.
