    360 Scratching My Disks

I've had more than one game get this large scratch on the outside edge of the disk after being in my 360 making them unplayable, the first two games I was basically done with or just borrowed a friends copy or whatnot to get through it but recently my 360 decided to fuck up my SO4 disk and I'm almost done with it (almost on to disc 2 anyway).

I'm wondering if there's anyway I can get a new copy of the game without having to shell out another 50~60$, I know none of my friends have it.

Also, how do I get my 360 to stop doing this? The first game it happened to I basically kicked the 360 over while it was playing the game (on accident) so that one wasn't particularly surprising, about the same with the second disk. But this one I haven't touched the 360, there's nothing near it aside from wires coming out the back end of it, and the disk hadn't been moved since I bought the game and put straight from the case into the machine.

Any help appreciated guys, I'm really hoping it's not just me this has happened to.

Also, is there possibly anyway to download the disc, burn it and download it onto my system then just use the original disc to get past the verification of ownership stage of booting from the harddrive? Or just any sort of way around this would be good.

Without a modded 360, you're not going to be downloading anything any time soon.

Also, when you kicked over the 360, you probably did some damage to the DVD drive. Stop ruining your games with it and get it fixed instead.

It hasn't ruined anything in a long time (probably 6 months or so), and by kicked I mean basically I walked by it to grab a drink and it just kinda fell over, which is why I don't have it in the upright position anymore.

Had the same thing happen to my gta4 disk. What i did was went to my gamestop and bought a used copy and finished it. They have a 7 day return for full refund on all used games. Depending on the size of your xbox HD, install your games to your HD as soon as you get them and delete as you need space.

that's what i was planning to do, or to just rent a copy and finish it up, i was just wondering if there's anyway to get a new disk (aside from me swapping it out with the used copy disk) y'know? but whatever

Has it happened since you laid the system down? Mine was destroying all my disks when i had it standing up, i laid it down and had no issues with it.

If you have it laying on its side, resting on a solid surface, there isn't much else you can do to avoid circular scratching. Considering that it was knocked/fell over multiple times, however, it may indeed have been damaged and there is not much you can do aside from taking it in to be fixed.

    Some options:

More info on the foam pad process: Refurbishing The Xbox 360 HL drive to prevent disc scratching

There's supposedly a plastic insert sold by modding sites which can also prevent scratching, but for some reason, I'm having a hard time finding that.

Been using them for years on all my disc related games. Still mint to this day.

edit: you can get them cheaper in bulk via factory direct.

Short Answer: In all honesty, the 360 is a piece of shit that scratches discs up.

LongER Answer: There is supposedly a poorly placed, sharp piece of metal near where the discs spin. This often causes a circular ring to be scratched into the disk and makes it unplayable.

it hadn't happened after I laid it down until this one, I'm starting to think the cat hit it or something but it's just annoying, although i'm somewhat glad to hear it's not just me, also those disc saver things are pretty awesome definitely going to get a bunch.

After seeing 635,129,491 360 disks and 12,542,850 XB360s I can tell you that 99.9999% of the time the "360 scratching disks" problem is from abuse or intention or unintentional misuse. Its not a problem native of the system itself. You knock it over, or bump it hard enough, your going to do that to your disks. Between me and 2 other roomates we've had our 360s laying flat since launch and never have we scratched our disks. Its preventable and thats the point of my post.

I would personally not recommend buying a lot of the D Skins. Maybe purchase one or two to try them out, but systems reject them fairly often, and they should never be used with slot-loading devices, like the Wii.

In the past, I did try to use the D Skins, and found myself frequently removing them, as the systems wouldn't read the games with them on. There were exceptions, but I'd eventually get disc incompatibility errors, especially on the PlayStation 2.

There's a reason they were discontinued at GameStop and sold out at clearance prices. They also aren't the original product.

    DiscGuard 2- HOME

Before the sealant, Proline offered a clear plastic disc protector that worked like the D Skin, except it didn't need to snap around the sides (which is usually more trouble than it's worth). You may still be able to find those around, but they're called DiscGuard, and that's also the name of a copy protection technology, which makes things a little more complicated.

EDIT: This is their main page: http://www.prolinedigital.com/

There is also actually a fix for it somewhere, but I don't remember where I read it.

I actually just can't stand that console. The games are fine and XBL is cool, but it pisses me off that they make so much money off such a poorly made piece of junk. I couldn't stand playing it knowing that it will die on me sooner or later... more likely sooner than later.

They all die sooner or later, ever one of them. Except for the Wii. This really isn't the thread for this discussion so I'll just leave it at this. In my experience with PS3/360 get what you want for the games and service you want. I can show you h/w failure issues on both sides. The attention tends to serve worse for the most popular of the 2, take it from me its true. What games do you want? Pick that system... Take care of it though, thats the bottom line. Simply taking care of your $300 investment, w/e u pick, will go a lot farther then the negative hype.
