Random POL Mail / Hacking Threat

I figured this would be worth mentioning because there's an active thread about hacked accounts where there were some suspicious blank POL emails.

I got a POL email seemingly at random at about 0800GMT today and was mostly paranoid about downloading it, but did anyway. It's an official SE mailing about the add-on next week. Presumably there'll be more of these on the release day and relating to the security tokens as they become available. Nothing to worry about, if people have been deliberately not checking POL emails and/or messages because of this.

Note: It seems to solicit you to the purchase page even if you've already have a registration code for it, so don't be scared of this.

I didn't know mine so I had to contact SE about it to get it changed
and now I only know it when I go and check my email and read the
transcripts log.

and even then that's only an email password and it resembles NOTHING
to what my POL password is.

they only asked me for current cc number on the acc and the basic address info.

It wasn't that easy for me. When I did this like 5 months ago, they made me give all the same information used for regular account recovery. Game keys, credit card numbers, addresses, etc. I don't get why they don't just have an "e-mail me a password reset" function or a secret question function.

Ask for someone of a higher authority in their office. Never take a response from a level 1 rep that doesn't even know what FFXI is. Seriously.

If you say you don't have your original FFXI key, due to a loss, fire, trashed, moved, etc. They will work with you if you talk to a supervisor. I've did this with 2 accounts before.

Ok. It really doesn't matter for me because I have my keys and whatnot. But, it does seem a bit retarded as almost every other system on the internet has a "forgot my password" function and FFXI has none.

I had this problem, I knew what the mails were about (Activating mules, a server xfer, etc.) and if you play with the mail settings you can get it to kind of just disappear. Think it has to do with the "How long does mail stay on the server" issue. I didn't want to call POL, but it worked for me.

I have mine set to delete immediately and for some reason I can't even check my mail I always get an error (not an incorrect password error). But it seemingly disappears after I restart pol.

Strange thing though is I can check emails on all other pol IDs just not my main and the settings seem to be the same.
