    Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

-Harry is moved using the control stick, the Wii remote is used to aim the flashlight

-When you look at something Harry will vocally respond

    -No load times

-The Wii remote acts as your cell phone, and the static noise comes out of the Wii remote speaker

-Combat has been removed from the game, you can only flee

-When the monsters chase you the Z button will allow you to break through doors, climb fences, through windows etc.

    Source

Supposed to be a reimagining of the first Silent Hill.

To be honest, I'd rather run away than deal with yet another horribly-implemented combat system.

To some extent I agree, but not being able to defend yourself in any way makes for a drawn out or frustratingly difficult experience.

They should reinvent using the environment as your weapon rather then removing weapons entirely, then add a more one button press system to cinematic scene of you using your weapon of choice on the enemy.

But short and quick cinematic sequences, sorta like assassin's creed but not as easy.

I had no idea Nintendo Power was still around, I thought that died ages ago.

    Article excerpts for lazy clickers;

“The characters play different roles, things don’t necessarily happen in the same order, and the story is taken in lots of new directions. You still play as Harry Mason, you’re still looking for your daughter, and you’ll see familiar elements, but they’re all twisted to betray your expectations.”

“One of Shattered Memories’ most significant and intriguing additions—your answers actually affect how the game unfolds. And it doesn’t end there. the game “watches” you constantly, and your behavior throughout can determine when you’ll meet certain characters, which scenes you’ll witness, and a variety of other factors.” “In Silent Hill games, the town always gets inside the protagonist’s head,” say Hulett. “But now, it’s getting inside YOUR head.”

“We’re using the Wii Remote to interact directly with the environment, so the puzzles are all based around that idea,” says Hulett. “You’re not just hitting buttons to choose things.” He also notes that the solution to a puzzle is always in the immediate vicinity, and assures us there’s a lot less backtracking then in previous games.”

“Longtime fans of the series will also be delighted to learn that there’s a way through every locked door; no more checking dozens of entrances only to find that 90% of them are permanently barred shut.”

I heard about this yesterday, but didn't see the bit about no combat...seriously, what the hell? This went from my "Absolute must buy" list to "probably not". We'll see how it turns out, but it really sounds lame.

Can you honestly say you enjoyed combat in the first game? All I ever did was run past those stupid piece of shit AI monsters... Can't be bothered with dealing with a terrible combat system. Plus, guns were really only about wasting your ammo when you're panicked.

compared to SH4 and SH: Homecoming, I actually rather enjoyed the tank-like combat of the first 3 games. Sure, it was clumsy, but that was the point-- your character was supposed to be someone who wasn't adept at combat, and the slow pace at which you moved/fought was supposed to contribute to the mood. Getting rid of combat takes away from what makes a Silent Hill game a Silent Hill game, good or bad.

Someone at konami needs to take a long look at SH4: The Room, Homecoming, and this game and realize they can't just go around "revamping" the franchise and expect people to actually buy it. Kinda incredibly disappointed at this.

Dodging monster is a lot more intense than killing them usually. If the gameplay is nice, I don't mind the lack of offensive power.

SH4's combat wasn't that distasteful was it? I think the fact that henry actually knew how to aim and fire a gun was helping to paper over the fact that some of the most dangerous enemies were literally unkillable and all you could fucking do was run and run and run if you didn't have a sword of obedience on you. Especially since a lot of them would just suddenly melt through a wall and blind you with the on-screen distortion they caused.

I don't know about you guys, but what would really make the Silent Hill series go from "creepy" to "shit my pants" in my mind would be if the baddies were smart enough to operate a freaking door. Not being able to feel safe anywhere, even in save-rooms would be enough to set me off.

That would really give you a better reason to run away.

The ghosts in SH4 would chase you through doors and walls. Those were pretty 'shit your pants' creepy. One of them was on fucking fire. One HAD A GUN. Yeah, that game was pretty tough at random spots.

In My Eyes by Ric from IIDX 6th Style, which makes sense...Ric is the vocalist of that song, made by Akira Yamaoka, who did the music for all the Silent hill games i think but is more famous for IIDx i'd say.

Yea i agree with Kaylia, if done well, it could really add to the scare factor.

edit: i didn't find much wrong with SH4's combat, i found it just as clunky at the rest, if not slightly better. Those ghosts fucking sucked, fuck, but your room was always worse, way too fucking quiet.
