Life after people, on history channel

I've come to the undeniable conclusion that human beings, at the very least European ones, are rather obsessed with their demise.

Not exactly, the obsession with one's demise seems to be particularly poignant with cultures that have apocalyptic religions.

Incidentally, the discourses that these sort of people produce tends to be very vindictive, by that i mean dreaming of your enemies endless torture in some nether realm somewhere.

A: I'm totally going to watch this anyway, even though i know it's use is essentially none.

B: I think we should all agree with each other more, and then perhaps bash Christianity a bit, since we all know that's what i'm aiming for anyway.

no way; christians have the best hell. i really cannot entirely hate a religion that has inspired writers to create an extremely organized hell, with fittingly symbolic punishments for the bad shit people did in life. that's real fear -- bitches truly achieving their goal as far as constructing an effective tool to encourage obedience.

also, watching pretty much everything on TV has essentially no use, so you can really kind of assume that without saying it. i can't even tell you the last time the stuff from "how it's made" came in handy to me, regardless of the fact that it's probably more on the educational/informative side compared to reality TV. it just comes with the territory.

Too bad that wasn't Christianities idea and it was mostly a parody which they adopted then when found out it was a joke were like "lolno, it's really like that."

Well, you'd be incorrect. Millenarian cults have appeared everywhere from West Africa to Japan, and from what's been unearthed of Central/South American indigenous religion, they were pretty in to the apocalyptic stuff. Look up the Moche, psycopaths to a man: "if we don't hold huge gladiatorial fights and sacrifice the survivors, the moon will fall from the sky or some shit!" It only really becomes absurd when the apocalyptic nutjobs are in charge, but millenarian cults tended to crop up every few hundred years in early-modern times when people get pissed off at the government. Lacking "modern" political notions of HOEP and CHAGNE, they're suckered in by equally charismatic but far more insane leaders.

tl;dr: cults prophesising the end of the world happen all over.

Also "life after people on the History Channel" strikes me as a marvelous non-sequitur. Surely that's the Dystopian Future Channel?

I gotta agree with Kuya on this one. Everyone seems to be fapping to all the different ways that the Apocalypse might come.

huh? as far as i know the main influence on dante's writing was the kitab al miraaj (sp?), which very much an islamic holy book and very much not a joke. the divine comedy itself is not a joke either; it's not at all meant to be interpreted literally -- what poem is? -- and never was. it's always been recognized as an allegorical work that uses its imagery and symbols to demonstrate a number of religiously-themed lessons and in some places to voice his political views. aesop's fables for adults, if you will. that's what i've been taught; maybe you know something i don't.

i think the apocalyptic fapping might be going on because 2012 is approaching and the mayans or whoever have been right about everything else so far! i think a lot of people fail to recognize that being that one guy who's going on and on about the apocalypse upcoming isn't going to be around to tell everyone's charred corpses i-told-you-so, though.
