I just upgraded from a SNES

    To a real powerhouse...

Sorry for a waste of space, I just had to share my excitement. The computer I was running before was a piece of shit and had integrated graphics, 512 MB RAM, and maybe a 2 GHz processor? Iunno.

    I'M SO EXCITED.

Plus I built my new shiny myself. And it has pretty blue lights!

    Running now on:

ASUS P5N-D LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
    Intel Quad-Core 2.83 GHz processor (Q9550)
    8gb DDR2 800 (OCZ Gold)
    EVGA NVidia GeForce GTX 280

You can change oversample the resolution in ur registry to make it look better and still run the game w/o lag in most areas. There should be guides on that you can dig up on this forum and on wiki and otherwiki.

does FFXI even need all those to run at full specs?

i did fine on my old single core 3500+ amd 64 lol, 2 gigs of ram and 7800 GTX.

im about to upgrade to a quad core soon enough though.

I already changed it, but I was going to look into increasing it more.

No, it really doesn't. But I can play lots of other games now too!

oh, and drawdistance is your friend.

Yeah, I haven't installed windower yet. I want to copy the stuff from my laptop and save the macros to server, so I have all my macros and stuff.

Haha, I had to look that up, I didn't even know what it was...

I'm not really looking to get into another MMO, I kind of play them for awhile, realize I like FFXI better, then stop. *Shrugs*

Nice setup. Just ordered a new one for me (after building my last 8 systems, i needed a break) Mine is actually pretty damn close to yours, only difference is I got the I7 920 2.66ghz processor, which requires ddr3 memory, 6gb of that, and a Ge-Force 285. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you plunk down for yours?

Not including the monitor, and not ordering the cheapest prices around (Some were, some weren't, I ordered off of Newegg because I trust them and they are pretty speedy and great with RMA's) I'd say I plunked down about $1000-$1300, I can't really recall anymore. (Tried to erase that bit from my mind...)

I hope you didn't order from a site like ibuypower.com. I originally did that and had to return it, because I had so many problems.

It would have been better if you used that EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 someone awesome was selling in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum.

i did from ibuy. Few people in my guild that I know in r/l ordered and had no trouble. If they completely fail i'll yell for a refund and build on my own. But when compared to other custom places, price was much better and I had more freedom in the choice of parts.

Hahaha, sorry! I bought these parts awhile back, and had an issue that I FINALLY figured out.

True, the price is very good. I had issues because I sent it in and they sent it back with the same problem after like, a month and a half... Finally they refunded everything but the shipping, which at that point was like, $200.

On a somewhat related note, I had no idea the GeForce GTX 280 worked with FFXI. I thought they had compatablilty issues from the 9000 series up.

I don't know about the other cards, but when I first installed FFXI, POL was all messed up. I downloaded new drivers from the Nvidia site and everything works fine now.
