It is our distinct pleasure to announce that during the third week of April, the total number of active characters across all worlds in FINAL FANTASY XI has exceeded the two million mark for the first time!
Since the commencement of service on May 16th, 2002, Vana'diel has gone on to become a vibrant gathering place for adventurers hailing from all corners of the globe. Boasting four expansions and one add-on scenario with two more in the pipes, FINAL FANTASY XI continues to evolve into an ever richer realm of magic and adventure.

We would like to thank you, our fans, for your loyal patronage over the years, and look forward to your continued support for many more to come.

Considering so many people have mules active right now just for the upcoming Mog Bonanza since the characters needs to be active for atleast 45 days to buy marbles.

The real census should be done AFTER Bonanza, after most people deacivate all those extra mules ^^;

right before bonanza. Alot of people have bonanza mules at the moment. I have 18 characters between 2 accounts myself.

EDIT: hope this doesnt encourage them to make us activate characters for more than 1 month next year.

Because there's people in the world that believe WoW actually has that 10million+ active players.

SE has been stating in about the last four censuses (sp?) (usually culled from data of about now so they are ready for the anniversary) that they have about 500k paying accounts which hold more than 1.5 million characters.

The jump from 1.5 mio to 2 mio seems to be more likely than the jump from 500k to 2 mio. And SE stated it's active characters, not accounts.

That's very well possible. But when you look at the numbers and then compare it to even one server's population, someone may think things do not add up. Is population in terms of accounts or characters made? Do they count accounts that are under disciplinary measures (ie banned/suspended)? Do they count de-activated accounts/character IDs? You could continue generating questions about the population, but that doesn't prevent a PR notice from pulling a magical statistic out of their ass and not providing the underlying info on how they came to the assessment.

I kinda wish more people would quit tbh. I don't really like the fact that SE can get away with adding reused zones and making us wait longer and longer for updates for no penalty in the # of subscriptions.. that just encourages them to continue doing it :/

5+ in the census, I thought.

Well, still, 2,000,000 active characters and assuming 500,000 accounts, that's 4 characters per account, which seems to be normal to me. That accounts for people like myself who have 40-odd characters across 3 accounts, and probably includes the 14-day trial accounts as well.

Pretty jazzed up way of saying "We haven't really gained or lost anyone in the last 7 years".
