Check disc error

Another PC here doesn't seem to be working. Whenever it starts up check disc kicks in automatically and gives a message saying it doesn't work, which then leads to a blue screen. None of the safe mode options work, and neither does "last good configuration", they all lead to check disc and then the blue screen. I tried escaping out of check disc for the few seconds it works but it doesn't get past it.


Any ideas?

Hard drive is most likely screwed. You maybe able to reinstall from scratch and get it to work for a while but I don't put much hope into hard drives that crash like that.

Try forcing the check disk in the system recovery console with a xp install cd. Just have to press R after it loads everything, then type: "/chkdsk /p" that will at least force the computer to attempt to fix stuff. If that doesn't work, try a repair install.

Anything that sounds like a mechanical failure? If so, call it dead.


If nay, pop the drive into another system and see if it detects it. Then run chkdsk on it from other PC, see what happens. If it works, put it back in give it another run. If it doesn't, recover what you can and replace. If it is a software failure only, take off the files you want to keep again and wipe it.
