Has anyone here ever tried playing LOTRO (Lord of the Rings online)?
Downloading the 10day thing to see how it is, very big fan of J.R.R Tolkein. Any BG'ers played this? If so, how did you like it? Good or bad? Responses are welcome.

Played it liked it till down the road it got boring but it is a nice alternative though
I played the trial, it was interesting but it's like a roleplayers wetdream MMO. Annoying as hell to me, so I said hell no to it. Lol
I would imagine it's the playerbase, not the game.
I heard it's a huge, huge game with not a big playerbase; my friend seems to enjoy it though. He's in love with LOTR though.
The people on the game are more friendly and helpful than your average wow or FFXI player that I did like.
I didn't play it long but I found it to be pretty boring, and I'm also a huge Tolkien/LOTR buff.
word is that a dev for this game posts here.
so if you have complaints, gogogogo. lol
Some IRL friends playing this, i did try it & end game is really poor. It's ok if you want a "MSN game" : talk to friends IG & that's it.
Thanks for the responses...just burned out on FFXI and WoW at the moment @_@ can't really bring myself to even log into those games for more than 15-20 min. Granted, I loved the games, and still do..just need a change of pace.
Tried EQ II....wasn't as good as I thought it was...so hopefully this game will satisfy my cravings for an MMO.
I'd suggest giving it a try. It's a really fun game that is put together extremely well.... that is, until your max level. That's when things get extremely repetitive. Basically your running the same instances over and over which are tuned way too hard for your average pickup group to complete. You need to do these instances to get your 'radiance gear' so you can even attempt to raid. Then once you have the gear and can raid, there is basically nothing left to do in the game. The gear you get from raiding isn't THAT much better than the gear you had previously and the raid instances aren't interesting enough to bother doing.
The game is a blast while leveling up though. There are MORE than enough quests to keep you busy and enjoying the world until max level.
WoW clone. Grind fest. Poorly written quests/epic storyline. Those are the 3 things that come to mind after playing the game to the level cap. I played with a group of rl friends... had they not played with me, I would have quit sooner (we all quit eventually).
End game is terrible and the PvP is rubbish. The end-game Raid... yeah, Raid... there is ONE, and they just added it, is gated. You need an armor set just to step foot in it. How do you get the armor set? Grind the same dungeons over and over again. I thought the legendary item system would be cool, but it turns out everything is completely random... so it's basically the Legendary Lottery. It makes FFXI's augment system look amazing.
The lore in the game is a total joke too... it throws Tolkien's books out the window and you're essentially playing Turbine's LoTR storyline. The quests are presented to you in a box to read, no cutscenes or anything like that. Kill x number of y animals, fetch x number of y items... etc.
Also, don't get me started on the armor/character models... characters literally look retarded/disabled... there is very little armor variety and everything is just re-skinned... which isn't acceptable for newer MMOs imo. It also looks painted on, there is zero depth to the armor. So unless you like playing a dude with skin-tight pants or a dress... I'd suggest you roll a female character.
Retarded LOTRO man says: Stay away!
EDIT: I will agree with aalryn that it was kind of fun leveling... but, playing it casually, I was at the cap within two months... that's when you hit the wall and there is nothing to do but grind endlessly, unless you want to roll an alt and do all the SAME shit over again, including the massive grind for traits and whatnot (no thanks).

I stopped reading thereWow clone
Played it during beta when they didn't even have the walking animations in the game, you kind of glided as you walked it was bad.
It was definitely a WoW clone. Yes, a WoW clone. When a game like LotRO comes out and it looks and plays almost exactly like WoW and it's basic UI, it is for all intents and purposes a WoW clone. The developers sure as hell weren't thinking about <insert obscure MMO that WoW 'copied'> and how they could make their game exactly like it; they were thinking about how damn successful WoW has been and how they can try their damnedest to get their game to play as similarly as possible.
At any rate, yes they lose points for copying WoW so hard, and being a boring game all around. Not worth the time of day compared to FFXI even.
Yeah, you guys were right...does feel like a WoW clone, damn it!![]()
Nothing wrong with that. As much as we all 'hate wow' it's a good game. Even though it's cool to hate on the big guys, they did a good job making a fun game, especially in the beginning. I'm just not a fan of how retardedly easy they have made wow in the expansions.
The storyline was far superior to WoW's nonexistent story. It does follow the lore in the books unlike what a previous poster stated (well follows more alongside it). It does not follow the movies, however.
Once you hit end-game it's over. You have to run instances over and over as I said so you can go deeper into raiding. It's just purposely put in there to gate you. However you can do what I did and join an end game guild, have your radiance gear in less than a week and do the raids.
(oh and not all legendary items are bad) This was mine and it only got better on the last reforge of it (didn't have any new ss's and my act is inactive now)

Its pretty much a lot like WoW with not as much PvP. Just your basic quest grinder. The game felt pretty generic to me though. I thought the combat was really dull and boring, the animations sucked and character models always looked stiff and left a lot to be desired. Always felt like my character was gliding and not walking. Hated the fact I could only reskin the UI and not totally customize it. Its probably a great game for people really into LOTR I guess, but it just felt too tacky to me.
