Does anyone know if it's possible to use images one sends to their POL email account as background in the Viewer? SE rarely updates what they have available for download, and it'd be nice to have a change of pace.

There is no option for that. Why would you want to even spend any more time then required to log on to FFXI from POL? I'd kill for a way to totally bypass POL.

The Peace of Mind song on POL is the only redeeming quality about the portal.

I just re-themed my POL a few days ago with the generic crap they have available. I thought it'd be nice if I could send an email to myself with a picture and save it to the HDD or something.

Install FFXIStyle (also known as brandson ui) from FFXIStyle & FFXICartography with Aikar's installer. There's an option there to turn it off.

Which music?

After you log in, if you go into Options --> POL Viewer
There should be some sound options.

BG Sound Effects
BG Music

You can go in there and just deselect whatever music track is
selected and it should stop any from playing.

If I had screenshots I'd be able to explain it better.


Also, I'm playing the PS2 version so no mods for me ; ;

As far as PC users are concerned, it's just easier to disable sound entirely for POL via its Setup in the Start Menu.
(it doesn't affect the sound for FFXI)

Until someone deciphers the custom PNG files they use, it's not possible. The files contain an image name, an icon for the background list, and the actual background image. I've asked and nobody seems to have figured it out yet. Also, you can't add them to the list from email, you ahev to manually add them to the proper place in the POL directory, which you can't do on console. I have all the JP-only wallpapers that were released, and instructions on where to put them so you can use them in NA POL Viewer on PC, but no means to replace them with custom images, or convert them to wallpapers I can use in Windows and Mac OS.

Here's some you can implant into your NA or EU PlayOnline Viewer programs. They were only available for download from the JP version of the client, and some like the Fantasy Earth ones are no longer available. Put the PNG files into the following part of your PlayOnline Viewer directory:

...\PlayOnlineViewer\usr\home01\download\wallpaper

They're not standard PNG files, but something custom SE came up with. If I could get them converted to standard PNG files, that would be great, so I could use them for my PC instead of just for PlayOnline Viewer. What's custom is that there's naming data to make it appear in the list of wallpapers in the program, and icons for each game they are from, in addition to the image.

Note that you can only have 99 wallpapers in your list at once that can be recognized.

You can also add background music from the other games to the music directory if you want different music in the Viewer. It just has to be the format they use for the in-game music. I put some from the old Front Mission Online POL Viewer pages in my main directory awhile ago. Break Free is the one I like.

That's funny, because I have POL sound disabled in the config and it still plays every time I start it up.

Worst bit is when you go from PoL > Final Fantasy XI window and you're greeted with the stupidly loud DUN DUN DUNDUNDUN DUN DUN etc

I just have my PC muted unless there's something I specifically want to listen to. When I was playing BRD a lot, it was the only way to save my sanity from that damn infernal piping.

On the other hand, I have a CD of the FFXI music and have been playing it recently on the surround system in my apartment. It's really quite good, I like it a lot.

Locate file: Dolphin_(by_Noriko_Matsueda).113.bgw

Rename file: muteDolphin_(by_Noriko_Matsueda).113.bgw

Done!

If you want to turn off all music for the rest of POL viewer. You can do this by going to the menu options once logged in to an account.
