Tonight I found out that ...

    I'm allergic to cherries.

It was strange, I mean, I don't really LIKE cherries so I rarely eat anything with cherries or cherry flavoring, so I guess it never came up before... Tonight I was at a party and we were sitting there eating cherries, and suddenly my tongue swells up to like triple size and starts welping up (like, with hives) and my throat and uvula were so swollen you could barely see down my throat.

I only have one other allergy (latex) which is contact based so I really had no idea what to do, I just shoved down some benedryl... a girl at the party suggested pepcid chewables so the inflammation in my mouth would go down... it was pretty bad, really painful ugh.

Good thing I don't really like cherries all that much, I won't miss them.

Like an allergist? No. I'm apparently also allergic to an ingredient in rooster sauce ( ;; ) because last time I ate that my tongue got all swelly and painful too, but we never actually figured out which ingredient it is that triggered the reaction... since I don't know what to attribute the reaction to, I just don't count it as a real allergy.

I had cats for 10 years before I found out I was allergic to them. I thought being itchy was part of having a kitty

Sometimes they just randomly show up. My wife developed an allergy to bananas as an adult after eating them all the time growing up with no problems.

You probably have Oral Allergy Syndrome, it's what I had for a really long time until I grew out of my hayfever. Basically, what happens is your body mistakes something in the fruit for pollen and reacts accordingly. The fruits that cause it depend on what pollen you're allergic to, I had problems with Apples, Peaches, Cherries, Pears, and to a lesser extent Avocados, Eggplant, and Walnuts.. but I could eat berries, bananas, grapes, melons, citrus, and pineapple with no issues. I never had a problem with the cooked/processed versions of these, however, so I could eat apple pie/applesauce, I think something about the heat causes whatever offending protein in the fruit to denature. You'd probably be safe with maraschino/canned cherries for baking and cherry pie, as well as cherry flavoring since that's like 100% artificial lol.

Anyway, you can read more about it here:
Oral allergy syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm willing to guess you'll have a problem with raw apples, maybe raw peaches too, but it depends I guess.

Actually, now that you mentioned it, my pollen allergy NEVER acted up in VA but I had it my whole childhood in NJ, so it could be a matter of the trees that are in the area. Luckly I grew out of that shit, so annoying.

It's also possible that you could be allergic to the pesticides in the fruit, in which case eating organic cherries would solve your problem. However, eating organic apples and watching my face blow up anyway was how I found out I had OAS.

man, anytime i went anywhere in NYC in spring i was miserable, eyes always streaming with tears, sneezing constantly, nose running, it was pretty bad... NEVER had that problem in VA.

In Italy i used to have really terrible reactions to mosquito bites. My whole arm would swell up from just one small bite anywhere on my arm. The bite itself would bruise up and turn like a gross purplish green color. The mosquitoes there were pretty huge though. Lokky never had any such reactions to his bites, so we figured it was because I wasn't from there, so I was more sensitive to it.

In my hometown, I was the same way as you. I knew when a new season was actually starting because I'd be dieing when a certain season would start up. I took Allegra-D all the time just because it was so bad. I move 3 hours south and I forgot I have allergies.
