    Laptop not going into standby

I've read threads where peoples laptops after a while just won't standby, and they delete some random spyware or process and it fixes it. however, i just got a new Compaq laptop and it did it right out of the box.

Long story short i had to return that one to bestbuy due to a hdd failure, got the same model at staples with a gb more ram in it, and it also does it. No software changes made. Right now I just have avg, aim msn and firefox running.

When I go to standby, it blacks out the screen and stays running. If i move the mouse or press a key it goes to the login screen kinda like i had just hit lock instead of standby. Any ideas?

No kind of firewall running at the same time? Ive seen a firewall cause windows to not standby/hibernate correctly.

Have you checked the "power" configuration in the Control Panel? 99% of the time its just a simple setting issue.

    This.

Most XP/Vista systems have a power option where if you idle for so long it'll go into standby/sleep mode, then eventually shut itself off. You can change/disable this in the power option.

I never liked standby, the system would always be glitchy after coming out of it :/

its a matter of when i push the button, it doesn't do it. I don't see anything in the power settings that translates to 'almost sleep' it looks like its trying to, but when I touch anything its instantly at the login screen and has never turned off. also, no firewall, except for windows

I know some people asked close to this already but try this

Right click anywhere on the desktop > Personalize > Screen saver > (is screen saver turned on?) > Change power management(at the bottom) > Change when the computer sleeps(on the right side bar) > 'Set the settings to your liking' > Click 'change advanced power settings' > Scroll down to 'power buttons and lid' > 'Power button action & sleep button action' Set those to whatever you prefer.

theyr all set to sleep, or nothing in the case of closing the case when its plugged in. Makes no difference if its plugged in or not it seems maybe it'll just go away on its own or something.

Check bios options perhaps? Other than bios or power settings inside of the OS, I don't know of anything you can do to check it.

Could always reformat I guess, then reinstall programs one by one until it stops working so you figure out what's causing it too.

check the profile for your plugged in settings (yes, they can be different from when you're on battery) Also, Hibernate >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Standby.
