    Question about tailoring

Looking to get an outfits or two tailored and i honestly have no idea on how to go about this or what a good price for having either a full suit tailored or just parts of an outfit. Any help would be appreciated as i honestly have no idea what im doing or know of any people that will be unbiased or knowledgeable on this.

Look up a few tailors near you and call them to ask for quotes. You can usually get a suit to fit your budget, but, in Australia at least, a reasonable tailored suit can set you back anywhere up to AUD$800-900 ($US600-700ish). This is probably totally useless in terms of letting you know price, because things are probably quite different where you live (having just moved from AU to EU I can definitely see it's not very useful directly translating costs of things!)

You can also just buy suits off the rack and have them adjusted to your measurements too, this is generally cheaper.

Nothing beats a bit of research though, call around!

The only thing I've ever had tailored are dress pants and they cost me like $20-30. I just did what Linliel suggested and called around to a few places and went to the one who quoted me the cheapest price. I've always wanted to have a suit made for me, but being a grad student is expensive

Tailoring is that extra adjustment that will make a good suit perfect but some shitty/cheap suits just can't be fixed but it depends on your tastes. You can get a suit made to fit or adjust an existing suit from the rack.

You should consider, utility, budget, versatility and size availability.

Some nice clothing retailers provide a good price if you buy the suit there. Depending on your budget you can go extreme or low cost. I think the lowest cost range to be safe is Mens Warehouse, they were very patient with measurement when my husband went there and they have a tailoring guarantee you can read on their web site.

MWH will measure you there to fit the suit you buy. You pay for it and come back later to pick up the tailored suit or just parts like pants/shirt.

It also matters if you are not an average-sized man. Some men wont even glance at MWH and will spend extra so if you are looking top of the line, you can find tailors at the boutique where the suit is sold or a list of preferred tailors by asking the sales person. If you are hard to fit, you might want to invest in extra money to get a suit that does fit well.

They ask you what kind of fit you want or suggest different types. They ask if you have specific quirks you want corrected in the fitting and they will give you care instructions like dry cleaning. Make sure you let the sales person know what color your shoes will be and how high you like to wear your pants if they don't ask. When you try your fitted suit, cross your arms, flex your arms, reach over your head and straight forward, sit down, walk, squat and do normal things to see if it is comfortable all the time. It may look silly doing /emotes in a store but a pair of pants with incorrect fitting can mean a split crotch when you squat or sit down. Trying it in the store assures no repeat trips and allows the tailor to adjust by eyesight.

They also should ask you which side of the crotch seam your junk tends to hang. :D ( I cannot elaborate since I have no "junk" of my own, it is a dood thing). The seam and fit relates to compensating extra fitting space on the side where it hangs. If for some reason you do not know where your stuff hangs, look at a pair of old jeans you wore a lot. They should be faded and have an impression on one side where your stuff is more often located. You can see this by laying the jeans flat on a flat surface.

How often you want to wear the suit is important. Work clothes is different than occasional formal.

They are always willing to give you info and convince you to buy more shit so don't be afraid to ask questions and window shop around.

    Good luck

A good tailor is worth his or her weight in gold. Ever go to a job or grad/professional school interview in a suit? This goes for men and women.

In America, at least, most suits have a four to six inch drop from the coat to the trousers, i.e. a 42" chest jacket comes with 36" or 38" waist trousers. That works fine if you're barrel-shaped or overweight. If you're slim or athletic, it sucks, and thankfully a lot of manufacturers and stores sell separates, so you can get the 42" coat with the 32" trousers.

Anyway, the difference typically between tailored or non-tailored is usually a tailor will make you look even better. Alterations shouldn't be more than $50-60 on a coat and trousers, which isn't so bad considering without it, you look like you're borrowing a suit from someone at times, instead of wearing one that looks like it was made for you.

Find a good tailor, it's not that expensive.
