In need of a client-side bandwidth throttling/limiting solution..

So I have a friend which has two kids and a foreign exchange student. They currently have 3 PC's on their network and the parents are getting pissed off since their kids (along with the exchange student) constantly sucking up bandwidth all day.

Now easy answer back to them, I asked if the router they use have an option for throttling. Which in return~ no. So they don't want to spend to get a new router since they just bought a new one.

Are there any applications out there which can be installed client side to limit bandwidth from the PC itself? I've looked up myself and the only things I'm finding are like Firefox/Bandwidth limiting software and such.

I could honestly use something like this as well lol. My uncle just had open heart surgery so he's staying with us, and since hes been here my internet had been slower and I've been getting more random DC's. I have a Linksys N router, doubt it has throttling. Currently there is 3 PC's always on the network, and 1-2 laptops. It's brutal.

Having B and G on the same network will make it cry

This may or may not be related to your situation

N is on a different frequency and is not subject to interference from B or G devices

The N is made to work with the others though, or so it says. The main 2 PC's that game and need the most (me and sisters) are hardwired to the router anyway.

If the router is DD-WRT compatible and they don't mind you flashing that on the router, you can set up QoS or throttle through the tc command.
If not, there's NetLimiter - The Ultimate Bandwidth Shaper and Shunra Nimbus that I know of. Personally I would go with DD-WRT when available.

The router they are using don't have that capability.

Anyways I found these in case anyone else was interested.

NetLimiter - The Ultimate Bandwidth Shaper

Bandwidth Manager for Windows - Bandwidth Controller

Gonna lead them to a copy of the NetLimiter and see how it works.

I used this software for a time, but never really got the hang of it, but I do recall it being quite powerful, but it just got annoying after awhile. However it's far from 'silent', so if I recall anyone can change the settings on the PC it's installed on, and I dont remember if it has the abilty to work across networks, as I think youd like that ability to throttle other PCs from your own.
