Despite previous governors' refusals, McDonnell issues Confederate history month proclamation

Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) has quietly declared April 2010 Confederate History Month, bringing back a designation in Virginia that his two Democratic predecessors -- Mark Warner and Tim Kaine -- refused to do.

Republican governors George Allen and Jim Gilmore issued similar proclamations. But in 2002, Warner broke with their action, calling such proclamations, a "lightning rod" that does not help bridge divisions between whites and blacks in Virginia.

This year's proclamation was requested by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. A representative of the group said the group has known since it interviewed McDonnell when he was running for attorney general in 2005 that he was likely to respond differently than Warner or Kaine.

"We've known for quite some time we had a good opportunity should he ascend the governorship," Brandon Dorsey said. "We basically decided to bide our time and wait until we had more favorable politicians in Richmond."

Dorsey said the governor's stamp of approval would help the group publicize the month and aide tourism efforts in the state.

Yeah being in North Carolina this does not shock me one bit. Like Isiolia, there are a shit ton of restored plantations, battlefields and memorials scattered all through Virginia and the Carolinas, but I think they could have been a little more sensitive about it lol.

Robert E. Lee's birthday (January 19, 1807) has been celebrated as a Virginia holiday since 1889. In 1904, the legislature added the birthday of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson (January 21, 1824) to the holiday, and Lee-Jackson Day was born.

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan approved an Act of Congress declaring January 15 to be a national holiday in honor of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. Since 1978, Virginia had celebrated King's birthday in conjunction with New Year's Day. To align with the federal holiday, the Virginia legislature simply combined King's celebration with the existing Lee-Jackson holiday.

On a serious note, I went to college in Fredericksburg, where they have a Civil War battlefield, the main highway is called the Blue And Grey Parkway, and you'll find plenty of Stars 'n' Bars waving downtown. Not surprised by this at all.

Yeah, my parents still live in VA and I'm disappointed in the new governor. I'm a conservative (not a crazy Lief-ite or anything) but I've actually liked the last two Democrat governors. I feel like they were very moderate and got shit done for the state. McDonnell/Cuccinelli have been pretty terrible and they're only three months in.

It seems like an effort to get more tourists(there really are shitloads of battlefields here). Just handled very, very poorly. I'm sure anyone that really wants to visit Confederate battlegrounds/museums/whatever will do so regardless of what the crackpot governor wants to call April.
