Make your own iPhone App?

I googled it and got a few sites that will make it for you with a fee attached while the other ones offer a 200+$ program that will make your app in 30 minutes!

What I would like to do, and I am not sure how feasible this is, is to make my own iPhone app as a side project to experiment with the coding and just screw around but actually get something useful in the end that I can actually put to use.

Now this app is just a database of information for a game I use to play but it has a lot of info that would be helpful to have on hand then going through the sites and looking it up each time. Think of it like a FFXI recipe database sortable by profession/materials/level/quantity that will give you all the recipe info, the HQ's if there are any, and the list of mats which are all searchable ect.

I just wanted to know from the more tech saavy people here what the whole process would be and where I should start to kind of get the ball rolling. I currently don't have much(any) knowledge about programming but I am willing to learn so I wanted to know where I might need to start with that in mind.

It helps a lot to have prior experience in programming before diving into the iPhone. You can download the iPhone SDK and XCode from Apple's site for free. It comes with a free iPhone simulator to test your apps, but to put your apps on an actual phone, you need to pay like 90 bucks for a developer's licence.

I have no experience making apps but a little with flash and i have some soundboards i'd love to make for at least a jailbroken iphone.
