    Gifts from Geeks

So it's easy enough to get a gift for someone like myself and I'm guessing many of you, thinkgeek and the like have some pretty cool little quirky shit I'd love to play with all day but I know none of my relatives are geeks like me. I don't know how normal people get each other gifts, my mom and cousin always give each other really weird shit like this one glass heart thing, I don't fucking know what the point of it is but my mom loves the thing.

Anyway, I'm hoping some of my fellow bg-goers have found some geeky gifts to give to normal people and wouldn't mind sharing ideas. I'm just sick of being lame and giving gift cards every year. I've tried looking around and have a few ideas, but I still think they may be just slightly too geeky.

Give everyone Doctor Who paraphernalia, only those worth buying gifts for will understand what you give them

For the girls, try something like a digital picture frame. They really love it. Or maybe for your parents, if they have an HDTV but still using a DVD player, get a Blu-Ray player.

For people that don't pirate their material or use netflix, movies is usually a pretty good option. I know some people just like to collect movies and won't even open the dvd.

As mentioned above, digital picture frames also seem to be pretty popular amongst some people.

A bit of searching took me to http://www.household-gadgets.com/index.html. Seems like a good place to get started.

Books, dvds, cds, sweaters, shawls, a flower vase or planted flowers, perfume, fragrance burners, jewellery, timepieces, crystal glassware, wines...list is pretty endless, though a bit general.

Try to find out what your relatives, friends are really after. I'm sure you can get them to drop a hint or two, though attempt it in a subtle manner. (They'll nevertheless probably know, and you'll know that they know, but everyone will just pretend no one knows).

Vase's are always a good bet for older chicks. I got one of my older male relatives a see through plastic model engine to build that should go down a storm and when it's built its a nice manly thing to have sitting in his office. For my sister I got a digital picture frame.

And for the geeky brother in laws brother a remote control R2D2!

I would stick with gift cards. Easy and hassle-free. I usually give my older cousins Best Buy gift cards, and the younger ones Gamestop gift cards. Movies are always a winner too, also DVD box sets of someone's favorite TV show.

It's funny though, since my fiancee and I are the only geeks around, we're still getting everyone electronics for giftmas. TV for uncle's new apt, new PC for grandma, Entourage DVD sets for sister, and laptop battery for a friend.

I generally stick to gift cards too -- I know the sorts of things my family are in to, so I got itunes gc for my brothers, my mum and sister I got department store gift vouchers, and for dad I got a voucher for a really good coffee paraphernalia website (he is really into coffee). My grandmas and other extended family my parents get them something which we give as a 'family' so I don't have to worry about them.

I'm hoping for a Itunes Gift Card just so I have an excuse to buy apps and maybe actually get the updates for the Itouch that costs money.

DVDs is the worst gift ever I think. Nothing more boring than giving away or recieving. Not very personal gifts. I really hate buying presents for christmas cause if it's not a special gift without thought behind it it might as well be. Such a waste of money/effort buying gifts for people when you don't really know if they'll use/like it.

In our family christmas is also only about the children. We agreed to only buy presents for them this year.

For the OP: Make something on your own to give away? I'm making a "painting" of a friend and his gf using

    except in b&w.
