College enrollment question

I'm finally getting around to going to College and I have no idea how to proceed.

To be more specific, am I supposed to apply at a school first or fill out FAFSA forms first? I have the FAFSA up online right now and 85% completed, but now it's asking me for a list of schools to send my information to. Do I get into a school and THEN worry about how to pay for it, or do I fill in the schools I want to try for now?

For some reason, I feel like this is a really stupid question, but I'd rather know for sure before I waste my time taking unnecessary steps.

That works in your favor big time, low income(no offense) and living on your own are terms of getting good money from the government. Especially community colleges, having a clean record helps too but if you're going to a community college(which is normally cheaper) you're looking at a possible free ride, maybe even some money coming your way at the end of semesters.

If you can get your highschool transcript, send that out to whatever college you want to apply at. If you don't have it, you usually have to take a placement test on math and english to see where you are at and what classes you can take.

On payment for classes, if you want, ask wherever you are applying for a payment plan thats best suited for you, or just pay per semester if you have the money.

Send it to the schools where you're applying. I think they're equipped to deal with the paperwork.

I usually do FAFSA for the following school year after I get my taxes done, though, which won't be until I get a W-2 at the end of January.

Eventually, I'd like to get a real degree, so I will ultimately end up at a University. First, though, I'm gonna have to get all the base-line classes out of the way, and there is little need to pay University prices for that (or so I'm told). As such, I was told to go to a community college who's credits are transferable to the school I intend to end with.

You can send it to like 10(?) schools without any charge, so send it to anywhere you're even thinking of applying. It doesn't count against you; they'll usually still send you a financial aid/cost of attendance estimate even if you've never applied there. You don't have to re-send once you're accepted.

This. You might have to wait until you get your W-2 for 2009 and complete your taxes. If you're filling out for the 2010-2011 year, you usually have to use the previous year's tax information.

You can put all the schools on it that you want. If you haven't applied to any college yet you just get letters informing you that they can't finish processing your financial aid information until you have been accepted into the college. It's best to apply for financial aid as soon as possible. Apply for college as soon as possible. At 27 you might be eligible for grants, but the money for those grants can run out quick if you wait too long.
