Texting w/ AIM to cell phone?

I know some phones have actual AIM you can log on your account, but I know AIM can also directly IM cell phones and it would appear to them as a regular text message, no? I wanted to know if this would charge my friend before I started doing this. I don't have unlimited texting, so I figured I would just send texts via AIM instead, if it wouldn't cost them any extra.

Edit: And to be clear, I meant text the phone directly, not their aim account that they can use on their phone. I'd send text to +1(area code)(Number) for example

Change the IM contact to a cell phone #, and send a message, that should be it. Only works in the USA.

How would I go about doing this? If you mean IM their phone number, yea I've already done that or did you mean set up my aim to count as a phone number?

Edit: also, to double check, free for them right? Just counts as regular text message?

no, it works. It's what I do now. I just wanted to know if it cost them extra money to accept/reply to them or if they count as a regular text message. I didn't want to send them anything that'll charge extra money and I don't have unlimited texting so I can't use my phone to text all day either.

Last question on this. When I text them, will it give them a phone number or some number they can save to text me w/o me having to text them first and them replying to it?

Shows your aim handle and ID, so the person should be able to retxt.
