    Is my PS3 dead? :(

Came home from work last night to find my PS3 completely off (not even the red standby light was on). When I left, it was on and I was bazaaring in UJ.

I flip the switch in the back to turn it off then on again and the red standby light comes on. I press it and my PS3 comes on for a split second the cuts off completely (standby light and all). I try again, and again, and again. No beuno. I try pressing the open arrow instead and same thing. Comes on for a split second then shuts off completely. Over and over and over again. I tried the to reset it (power button and open button at the same time) but same results... comes on for a split second then completely shuts off.

I tried again this morning and same thing happens as before. So... is my PS3 dead? If not, how do I fix this?

Have you tried another power outlet? exemple plug it directly in the wall and not in a power bar or simply on another power outlet

Souunds like a power issue, or the PS3 is not recognizing your hard drive.

See below for the repair menu:

Try accessing the repair menu. Here's how you do this:

With a solid red light showing, hold down both the power & eject buttons.

You're going to hear a single beep, then a double beep.

Once you hear the double beep, release both buttons.

You'll get a message on your TV saying "connect your controller using USB".

Following all the instructions will lead you to a 6 item menu.

You are going to choose number 3.

If that option doesn't work, pick number 6.

BE WARNED!!! Number 6 will delete ALL of your saved memory!
Also I cant watch this at work but:

Sounds similar to what I had with my first launch PS3. And sorry I don't know how to fix, I assume you get no image? Supposedly it helps to try composite cables if this happens. I dunno, I never got mine fixed or looked at, because A) I got no Sony warranty on import machine and B) it was new back then, nobody fixed PS3's since they didn't know how.

Maybe unrelated, but when it happened, it froze during FFXI. Making my screen 80% with a snow effect, turned it off. I'm sure it wasn't because of FFXI and it was just some solder melting or w/e since it would be warm above the bluray drive after an hour or 2 of play and my current (also 60G Full BC PS3) isn't warm above the bluray drive ever.

Yea, I google'd those instructions last night but it didn't work. It cuts on for a split second then completely shuts down (even the red light which shouldn't happen). I'm going to try changing outlets like Rata suggested. It does seem like every time I turn it on, it goes to a state that appears to be unplugged (with standby light cutting off). Could also be the hard drive recognition but why would it shut down completely and not let me at least access the repair menu to refragment it?

Does it flash with a yellow light when you turn it on, then go back to red?

Sounds like you leave it on for long periods of time, which most likely overheated your PS3 and has caused the solder to crack and detach.

If this is the problem you can open it up and reflow the solder with a heat gun. Or you can send it to a repair shop to do it. Or you can call Sony up, and unless your PS3 is still in warranty, you will have to pay to have it replaced with a refurb.

EDIT: Does it actually turn on and start to boot up but then the power cuts out? If then, yeah probably a power supply problem.

It didn't do this at first but last night it's official... yellow light of death

It's my own fault really. I pretty much left it on for months at a time bazaaring and what not. I've read the heat gun stuff and all that but I wouldn't know what I'm doing so I'll have to get it repaired.

This may seem weird, but do you have anything plugged into it that's 'not normal?'

What I mean is, when I try to charge my Blackberry on my PS3 when I can't find my normal charger, it does wonky things with the system...which includes locking it down completely. But with that said, when I have my cousin in and he tries to charge his phone on it, everything works fine.

    Something to consider.

    Edit: Oh, YLoD >.>
