Amaretto Sour / Girl Drinks

Are Amaretto/Sours girl drinks? A buddy asked me this...

wtf makes something a girl drink? I mean I dont care if somebody is ordering Cosmos, Whiskey on the Rocks or Beer...doesn't matter to me. But what makes a drink "girly"...two or more fruits being involved maybe?

From what I understand, if it has a good flavor, it's a girly drink. I don't care about such labels though, I like drinks that taste good, such as amaretto sours.

IMO girl drinks are simply drinks that girls love to drink but guys usually don't drink. Most times this means the drinks are really sweet and have low alcohol content. Midori sours, amaretto sours, sex on the beach, etc. fit the bill perfectly.

A good rule is that if you have ever heard a girl tell you about the drink, then tell you that all her girlfriends love it. It's a girly drink. One girl liking a drink doesnt make it girly, but a large grouping does. Multiple trials, go scientific method.

Not necessarily. A long island iced tea (about 30% alcohol) has double the ingredients as a midori sour (about 3% alcohol).

Well don't get me wrong. If a girl hands me a girly drink then I'm not going to turn it down. I just wouldn't order a midori sour for myself. There are plenty of good tasting, non-girly drinks. Grey Goose sour or Jack and Coke, for instance.

For me, the exception for buying girly drinks is when they're ridiculously cheap. Some places do $2 SoCo lime shots, which is great if you're with a large group.

LITs are the best for that, holy shit. If I'm not drinking vodka and tonic then I'll go for that.

Dude Mojito's are not girly. They are ordered by old dudes playing domino's and smoking cigars. I don't know how that could be girly.

Does the quality of a Long Island Iced Tea vary greatly from place to place? I realize there is always going to be slight variation, but there are some drinks that you just can't screw up that badly. Is this one of them?

I've only ordered a LIT once, but it was the best drink I've ever had and totally knocked me on my ass. I dunno, maybe the bartender felt bad for me being alone in the bar, or perhaps that's just how they always are.

Yes, it can be screwed up.

It's typically equal parts vodka, rum, gin, tequila, and triple sec, along with 1.5 parts sour mix and a "splash" of coke.

Make it with spiced rum, and it's noticably different. Too much coke, tastes funny. Cheap gin or vodka, and you notice, etc. etc.

By and large, most sports bars and drinking establishments with more than a couple bottles on the wall will know how to make one.
