Big gulps and microwave popcorn every night for 10+ years.

Earlier this week during a family dinner, my mom said she been having a big gulp [super big gulp size, pepsi] and microwave popcorn every night for the past 10 years. Yeah she's a big lady, but it shocked me that she would just keep eating and drinking that shit non stop.

I want to say this has been going on almost 20 years, but will have to check later with my dad.

What health risks she looking at? She started to complain about the smallest things like going from up and down the stairs all the time, but she also has a bad knee. Not sure if that's the only thing causing her trouble.

Flames more than welcome since it's not my body, but curious of how this is going to effect her. She's turning 50 this year too.

No? Really curious to seeing what will be a result of this other than just waiting years to figure it out.

edit: seriously though how is this even a question, diabetes is prob guaranteed from all the extra sugar intake, and if shes fat like you said expect heart disease and high blood pressure/cholesterol too.

    A) she probably won't make it to 60
    B) you know those 400+ lb ppl in the scooters at walmart? she's next
    C) diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc.

    Just a matter of time.

All reversible to some extent if she changes completely - hard to do after 50 years of shit. And she probably knows all this.

I know I used to be obsessed with soda, but I actually can't even drink it now. Try seeing if she likes iced green tea. I was bored one day, so tried making a pitcher to drink, since I was out of soda and tap water in southern california tastes horrible. I used a little over a cup and a half of sugar in it ( i know, i know) and went to town.

I actually liked the taste a bit, and knowing of how healthy it is for you, decided to make more, a gallon at a time. (I drink like 5-6 glasses a day, a gallon lasts me about 2.5 days lol). Interestingly, it's been about 3 weeks since I started doing this, and I've noticed a few things. One, since I drink this, no need to drink soda, which cuts down on a lot of calories. Two, the amount of sugar I need in it has drastically gone down. I only put a little less than a cup of sugar to sweeten it... in a whole gallon. And it tastes sweet to me, lol. Third, I drank a soda yesterday cause ran out of tea bags... and gagged. It was horrifyingly sweet, and I drank only several sips before giving up and suffering the wrath of the tap water, and in socal, that's saying something. I am literally incapable of drinking soda now. XD

Also, green tea contains those lovely free-radical killers, and also magnesium, which can help improve mental functions (and of course, is an essential nutrient to life itself. a lot of americans are magnesium deficient.) I've noticed my complexion has improved, and my mind is sharper than normal, which is saying something. I also don't get hungry as much, to the point that I'm actually losing weight. (gone from 253 to 241-243ish in a little less than a month, and I'm rather motivated to keep it up.)

As far as the popcorn goes, try getting her hooked on homepopped, which is a lot healthier snack than microwaved. A hot air popcorn popper is pretty cheap at a garage sell or something, or you can get a (fairly large) saucepan with a lid, put enough popcorn kernels to just barely cover the bottom of the pan inside, add 1-2 tablespoons of oil or so, then put the lid on and turn the heat up. Once the kernels start to pop, start shaking it every 10 seconds or so, to avoid burning the popcorn. once it reaches the top of the pan (or stops popping... or more likely, starts popping so much the lids starting to come off), just toss it in a bowl or something, add a bit of salt or sea salt and toss till it tastes right, and your good. You CAN add a bit of butter melted in the microwave, but too much will cause the popcorn to shrivel and taste soggy and horrible... so there's that going for you since you can't cheat and load it with butter.

The popcorn stays good for a day or two, though it starts to taste a little stale if you leave it uncovered all night lol.

And another thing I'm trying right now is T'ai chi, which is really fun and gentle exercise, yet is surprisingly good workout. If you got a community collage near your house, try checking with them, as it cost me about 50 bucks for a whole semester, and the teacher is awesome and long practitioner. There's different styles, some more combat and strenuous, like the Sun style I'm taking, which is a bit more martial oriented, and also more gentle types. Qigong is a walking meditation that's similar and also great exercise. Both these types are gentle on the body compared to other exercise types, and you don't need any special equipment. Also improves your balance dramatically, and flexibility. A typical session for us consists of warm up/stretching > wedding walk/walk and kicks (this is very tiring, but great at improving balance and leg muscles lol) > the form (steady burn, but not tiring) > cool down. Dunno about my classmates, but after 2 hours of this I actually feel MORE energetic after class is over, and i despise most exercise. This however, is with a group and really fun, and its enjoyable to see your balance change so dramatically so quickly.

Anyways, these are just tips I've discovered as a lifelong loafer who's been slowly gaining weight my whole 24 years. Maybe your mom can try some of these and see how she likes it. Careful though. Once you start losing weight and feeling better though after a couple weeks... its actually quite hard to quit. XD

I wonder what will happen if someone follows this plan for 10 years+

Aramychef Liam Francis was hamstrung when a vital supply helicopter was shot down by Taliban insurgents.

It left him with no fresh supplies and a storeroom bereft of everything but... Spam.

With a nod to Monty Python, Cpl Francis, 26, hatched a cunning plan. Spam with everything. For 42 days it was sweet and sour Spam, Spam fritters, Spam carbonara, Spam stroganoff and stir-fried Spam.

Within minutes of their first meal, the hungry men of 2nd Royal Welsh Guards regaled each other with the classic Monty Python Spam sketch about the restaurant that includes Spam in every dish.... egg and Spam; egg, bacon and Spam; egg, bacon, sausage and Spam etc.

But the joke wore thin after a few days when new supplies could not reach their forward operating base near Sangin in Helmand Province.

Without their usual diet of chicken, burgers, sausages, chips and vegetables, morale and their digestions suffered. When liberation came, the relief was profound.

‘The first day off Spam, I prepared battered sausages, chips and curry sauce,’ said Cpl Francis of Tidworth, Wiltshire.

‘The sergeant major said it was the best meal he had ever had. He’d never seen morale so high.’

Cpl Francis’ proud mother, Pat, 65, said: ‘I was absolutely amazed when I heard the story because he hates the stuff.’

I drank at least two cokes for four straight years everyday. Consequence? Lost my gallbladder and get pissed off fairly easy. Stupid to stay but it's a hard addiction to break. I think about coke daily and I haven't drunk that shit in four months. What I do is everytime I crave coca cola, I grab a dasani instead. That water is delicious and I keep my fridge full 24/7. Tell your mom to quit being stupid. I'm surprised I didn't get diabetes.

    Doesn't exist in UK
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3809539.stm

Something had gone wrong at the Dasani factory and a bad batch of minerals had contaminated the water production with a potentially carcinogenic bromate. Coke admitted defeat. Immediately they withdrew all 500,000 bottles of Dasani in circulation. In just five weeks, Dasani had come and gone, arguably providing more in terms of entertainment than refreshment.

Have her get screened for Diabetes, which is more than likely what she has by now.

I guess it's okay, if she wants her kidneys to fail.

Hmm, regarding soft drinks (soda) I have a can of Pepsi Max/Coke Zero (sugar free stuff).... each lunch (lunch consists of either a salad bowl and yoghurt or some light canteen meal, etc). So 5 times a week once a day I have a can of this stuff.

Am I at risk? lol (i tend to eat healthly most of the time, not really had any fast food for months)

Depends on what you eat along with consuming the soft drinks. Your body still responds to the artificial sweeteners the same way it does sugar, so when the intestines detect the sweetener they'll increase their capacity to absorb glucose. So if you eat crap like chips, white bread, rice, or anything with high glycemic index in it then your intestines will quickly absorb those carbs. You said you drink them with a salad and yogurt, which both have pretty low GIs so you're doing it right there, not sure what your canteen meals are, but you can look up the GI of most foods on the internet if you care.

And on the dental side, you're exposing your teeth to all the acids they dump in those drinks so that's not very good. Drink them with a straw if you care about keeping your teeth.
