    Can't launch ffxi

So i've decided to reactivate yet again, and when ffxi goes to load the opening screen, the background goes black and the screen flashes, like the program is attempting to open a screen and it keeps getting pushed back, if that makes any sense. a black window tries to cover the screen as if fullscreen is trying to run, but it keeps glitching. after about 15 seconds i get an error "failed to initialize direct X 3D" etc. This is a fairly new machine that is waaaay over the specs to run ffxi, and i've run it successfully before. I tried to run ffxi in windower and normal POL, but no luck. any advice?

I think I usually got that when I messed with the registry settings for resolution and then tried opening it without windower or something...Not sure, try going into the ffxi setup and changing to a standard res if it's not already?

I know some people can get around DirectX problems by booting IE or MSN messenger and leaving them up until you get into the game. You basically have to force DirectX to load because FFXI won't boot it. Don't know if this is the same issue.

siralin's suggestion worked, so thank you both. now windower is just loading the game in fullscreen, and i forget why that happens lol. no taskbar or anything so windower is bypassing itself or something.
