No one forces you to use an alarm clock, automobile, TV, an OSHA/UL approved house, or Al-gore-invented internet. You choose to live this lifestyle, like the rest of us, and we (all) pay for things when we need or want them. I am not told HOW MUCH electricity to use each day, how many miles to drive, how many facebook posts to leave (thank goodness), and on and on and on.
To have a tax burden placed on Americans (even though some Americans may not have an income) is unprecedented. I didn't choose to be alive, I just am. I shouldn't have to pay into something merely because I exist, and no one is going to convince me otherwise. That is my paramount problem with the bill, and hopefully it will be overturned on the basis of unconstitutionality, for this serious violation alone.
Here's also what's wrong with the bill, from my perspective (the solutions to some of them may be obvious.)... See More
1. There is no mention of limiting malpractice awards in this bill. This, and the insurance that hospitals have to purchase to protect against malpractice suits are the two main reasons why healthcare services are so expensive. Solution? LIMIT THEM.
2. Nothing is being done to encourage people to be responsible with their medical care. Now that we have this "system" in place, people will be more likely to fall back on doctors when they don't even need to. Solution? More accountability in the doctor's office. When someone comes into the doctor's office when there is nothing wrong with them, make them foot half or more of the bill. That will "encourage" them to be better about crying wolf less often.
3. There is nothing in this bill about encouraging doctors and patients to use generics instead of the more expensive name-brand prescriptions. This solution is self explanatory.
4. Mandating that people buy something only creates less potential for competition, and has the potential to create more monopolies, driving prices up. This is simple economics. You can't think of healthcare as a utility, because it is FORCED upon us now. Remember, I can choose to turn off my TV (conserve electricity), not drive my car on the roads (ride a bike on the dirt.) This bill FORCES something upon us all. Prices ultimately go up.
5. There are no penalties for people who use tobacco, alcohol, or other harmful substances in quanties in their body. This bill actually encourages people to keep their bad habits and bad lifestyles. Despicable.
6. There is nothing in this bill that encourages the use of less expensive medical procedures instead of the outrageously priced CAT and MRI scans. These expensive machines need to be more tightly regulated, and only used when absolutely necessary. It seems right now it is pretty routine to get one of them, even with a slight head injury.
7. No competition across state lines. Why in the heck can't we get this turned on?
8. What do you think is going to happen when every small business in the country employing more than 50 people is going to have to provide insurance to all their employees? Businesses don't care about their employees. They care about surviving. At the end of the day, it domes down to simple numbers: higher costs mean more layoffs and/or higher prices. This bill is going to create more unemployment and raise the price of every single commodity in the entire country. I predict a doubling of the prices in the restaurant industry by 2014 (unless the bill is repealed).
9. Finally, there is nothing in the bill which helps people take better care of their bodies. No mention of preventative care such as healthy eating habits or recommended excercise routines. This bill is the ULTIMATE ENABLER of Americans with problematic lifestyles. 19 minutes ago
