RAM woes

Alright. I have 3 GB of DDR3 RAM installed. A memory upgrade is the first thing I want to spend money on seeing as 3 GB is hardly enough to run two fullscreen games at once on 64-bit Windows 7. With two games and firefox open, my memory usage is never below 80%, so god forbid I open too many tabs in firefox and crash an application. My only problem is that newegg doesn't carry the same RAM sticks that I have anymore, so I can't simply buy 3 of the same (which would have been my preferred method).

So my questions are: Is it a no-no to mix 2 different brands of RAM (assuming same general specs)? And if finding a place to buy the same sticks i'm already using, or if mixing brands is not an option, would it be better to get three 2GB sticks or six 1GB sticks? (6GB total is what i'm shooting for right now)

Using different brands of RAM is possible but not recommended. You have to be sure that they're all set to the same speeds and timings, and at least try not to mix the pairings.

To answer your question though, 3 2GB sticks would be the best bet.

i had the same question earlier today =P

You can use any mixtures of memory modules together, as for the benefit of dual channel. I'm pretty sure they have to be the same speeds, timings, etc.

edit: Just checked my motherboard manual and it says the same thing.
