Uninstalling "Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver"

Yeah, so apparently since Windower doesn't like IR devices on Vista, it requires an uninstall of this device. The thing is, even after uninstalling it and rebooting, it appears in the device manager all hanky-dory as if I never touched it. You need to disable the device, but I can never disable it because you need to uninstall it first. An uninstall requires a reboot. A reboot will seemingly reinstall it. See the regressive cycle here? Yeah.

How do I do this?

Unless someone else has a suggestion, I believe your only choice is to uninstall it prior to playing FFXI each time. I've heard of people being forced to do the same thing for other games, largely because uninstalling it is extremely complicated. Since you aren't forced to reboot after doing it, this is an option.

I was afraid that was the answer. I'm still open to other's suggestions, but I'll just take that as the solution for now.

There is no prioritization by windows, where you need to uninstall a device first before you can disable it.

I haven't used Windows XP in ages, because I've been on Vista for a long time, but as far as Vista goes, I can disable any piece of hardware and after reboot the device will remain disabled

Not sure if you're being sarcastic with the first part of this post or not, but for the sake of arguement, he doesn't need to disable it with a jumper, just disable the device in his device manager. It will remain disabled (I have the same device disabled in mine, as I have a TV tuner card and I don't enjoy unplugging the IR Receiver everytime I wish to play the game) even after a reboot

That's just the thing -- a restart will REINSTALL the IR device, never allowing me to actually disable it.

I am having the exact same issue with my HP HDX16t. Trying to disable the IR devices has been a pain in my ass the last two days. The only thing worth maybe noting is the first time I uninstalled it, rebooted, and then as quickly as I could went back to the Device Manager and right clicked in the eHome app and it gave me the option to 'disable'. I clicked it but it seems as though it still automatically reinstalled. I'm stuck using the POL viewer with no plugins. This shit sucks.

Yup, that was the first thing I did. No option to disable IR devices, though.

Start -> Right click Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager -> Click the + at Human Interface Devices -> Right click MeHIT and you'll get the option to uninstall.

try uninstalling it and then running ccleaner before you restart to clear out your registry as well as disabling any startup services that might be causing it to automatically reinstall in msconfig (win > run > "msconfig" > startup tab).

you might also want to try disabling SSDP in services before uninstalling by typing "services.msc" into Run, right-clicking on it, and setting its startup type to "disabled." i'd suggest re-enabling it if this doesn't specifically fix your problem.

OMG I have been uninstalling this driver every day for a year on my desktop machine prior to loading windower. I even asked my IT friend. Totally missed this.

And as for the HP laptop, I have one. Its a 64bit machine. Took me 30 minutes doing the uninstall>reboot>click disable before it finally registered. Been 3 months and hasnt reinstalled since. I was about ready to throw the laptop through the window at the 25 minute mark.

First off, thanks for the helpful post. I disabled SSDP and that didn't work unfortuantely (renabled it after), nor did the Vista option to load drivers on device discovery. Uninstalled, rebooted, and it was just sitting there again lol. I noticed that uninstalling another entry, ENE CIR Receiver, removes not only it but the MeHIT as well. I'll try once more, but I'm not even seeing an option to disable, just uninstall. If it doesn't work this time I'll just stick to uninstalling it every time until the Windower team fixes the incompatibility (if that's possible).

Again, if anyone has another secret way of making this uninstall/disable work, I'm more than willing to try.

EDIT: Oh shit, wait, I think I might have it. Couple more tests.

EDIT2: SOLVED! Disabling both functions in Milton's post then uninstalling "ENE CIR Receiver"(make sure you check the box on the prompt that asks if you want to uninstall the software too (taking "Microsoft eHome Infrared Receiver" with it)) and restarting will prompt you if you want to install the driver upon reboot. Select "never for this device" and that is that! Thanks again for all your help.

Awesome! As a not so tech savvy person who doesn't want to fuck up their comp to get windower running, are all the directions within either Milton's post or Epical's to copy the fix? The directions there are easy enough to follow, I just want to make sure there isn't something I may miss bc I'm a noob....

Hopefully this is easy to understand (just quoting my post from the Windower forums):

SOLVED! Here's what I did to fix it (and not require uninstalling it EVERY time you want to play XI):

1) Disable automatic driver downloads:
- Start menu -> Right click Computer -> Properties -> Advanced System Settings (top left) -> Hardware -> Windows Update Drivers Settings -> Select "Never check for drivers when I connect a device." -> OK -> Apply -> OK

2) Turn off SSDP Discovery:
- Start menu -> Type in "services.msc" without quotes and press Enter -> Scroll to "SSDP Discovery" -> Right click and select Properties -> Change Startup Type to "Disabled" -> Apply -> OK

3) Uninstall ENE CIR Receiver:
- Start menu -> Right click Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager -> Click the + beside Human Interface Devices -> Right click "ENE CIR Receiver" and select Uninstall -> MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE UNINSTALL SOFTWARE BOX ON THE PROMPT (this will take the Microsoft eHome Infrared Trasceiver with it) -> OK -> Let the uninstall take place -> Reboot the computer

4) Preventing installation of IR device drivers:
- Upon reboot you will receive a prompt asking you if you want to install the device drivers -> SELECT "NEVER FOR THIS DEVICE"

5) Turn ON SSDP Discovery:
- Follow directions from earlier and select "Manual" from the drop down menu (Startup Type) -> Apply -> OK

5) Play XI

I had this problem about a month ago...

My solution was booting in safemode. In safemode the IR device doesn't install, however a device called "Consumer IR device" loads in the "system devices" area. Simply disabling that fixed the problem.
