    Crafting required?

I've never been into crafting in any game, always found it to be boring. It seems as though it will be a requirement to have one in 14, though, to make your gear and perform repairs.

Is crafting going to be required, greatly helpful, or something you can totally avoid?

There are NPC's that will repair your items up to 50%.

You can always wait for other people to make gear and buy it from them.

I don't think it's meant to be something everyone is supposed to do as a side activity.

I wouldn't say required, but with the current rates that weapons are losing their durability for example, I'd say it's greatly helpful.

For making your own gear and such, greatly helpful as well, but I'm sure you'll have friends and/or LS members that can craft shit for you if you bring them the appropriate mats.

You can't avoid it totally though, as you'll be using the crafting services of other players, but I guess it's not exactly a mandatory to level one yourself if you really hate it that much.

If they added repair NPCs at outposts you wouldn't really need a craft to repair stuff. As it stands though, if you kill or party for long enough, your weapon will wear out and being able to repair your stuff in the field is useful.

I wouldn't say it's necessary as long as you know you have people you can fall back on for favors; I think in the long run it might be expensive if you don't though. The thing for me this time around as opposed to XI is I'm jumping in at the games launch where everyone is on equal ground. If you plan on putting a lot of hours in a week, it certainly doesn't hurt to at least take something up so have a means of making money later down the road especially when you factor in the surplus system that exists for the time being.

I would go against what everyone here is saying and say yeah, it's pretty much necessary. Without a solid auction house system, it's very hard to find gear for your job at the moment. Getting the materials is easy enough and eorzeapedia has a decent list of crafting recipes. For PUL, I am carrying around leatherworking materials and synthesis materials just so I don't have to run back to town when I am grinding. I have to start carrying around Blacksmith tools as well because I want some Bronze Knuckles. Also might have to get my own clothcraft set because some of my gear is made of cloth. I would say every DoW/DoM has about 2-3 crafting classes to get around, while each crafting class has 2 DoL classes.

    In summary: Yes, start crafting.

It would be handy to level some crafts if only to repair your gear since it's fairly expensive to repair higher level gear, iirc one of my pieces (cotton dalmatica I think) would cost 11k to repair at the NPC, or 2 cotton fents if I do it myself. On top of that, the repairs NPC doesn't seem to have an option to repair accessories, so it'd be useful to level goldsmithing at least to fix those.

In retail when optimization issues aren't such a bitch and it's not so fucking laggy to even start crafting something, then sure.. I'd say it'd be better to craft, but as of right now, I'd say no. I've done a little crafting and it's alright.. but good lord is it too damn laggy to do anything in some cases.

Was thinking of picking up Leatherworking/Weaving myself to craft my Archer a level 18 bow/higher armor and what not. Maybe goldsmithing too for accessories, but I don't play much as it is.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I definitely wouldn't say it's required. Is it nice to have? yes. But I know plenty of people who skipped out on it and still managed to have decent gil.

Yeah.. once you get to the point where you can do the level 10 levequests... should be easy enough. I solo'd 2 of em at Physical Rank 12/Archer 8 and came out with like 12k total and a piece of armor so D: Not great, but better than what I had, haha.

ya, for sure if you want to make some good money it's worth it. Especially if you just do the guild levi quests on the side (considering they are on a separate cooldown from the field levies). But totally not necessary as the field levies give some nice guild rewards.

also every mob likes to drop like 2-3 items anyways so you can npc the crap out of that shit lol.

Yeah money definitely hasn't been a problem in OB so far. I tend to get lots of same shit as a reward from the leves, which surprisingly I don't really have much use on the jobs I play, so I just put them in my bazaar and hey, the crap actually sells pretty well! Add the money rewards from leves and the main questline, plus the random NPCable trash you get from grinding and boom, you'll be surprised how much money you suddenly have. So I wouldn't say you need to craft to make money, as there are plenty of other incomes.

And for a little offtopic; unfortunately it's also been much easier and faster to sell the equipment by standing near the Aetherytes bazaaring them on my character rather than putting the stuff on my retainer and have her standing 24/7 at market wards, which should really start ringing the alarm bells of SE about how shitty the market wards system actually is.

I think the laggy ui is what's turning me off to crafting, I have so many items I haven't sold because it's so laggy.

What crafts benefit Pug? I'm like physical 14 and still have level 1 weapons.

Other than being a fair way to make gil, it also pumps your physical level really high, making it that much easier to level up DoW/M classes.

However unless you like chucking rocks it's pretty much just like any other crafting system but to actually play the game in some serious manner you need to be a DOW.
Crafting is only required if you don't like being gimp or know someone who can make your gear.

At the moment, crafting is almost required because gear breaks so quickly. If you want to be killing/surviving the higher level stuff your fighting, you'll want it. I jsut hope there are bag expansions later to actually be able to carry all the mats to repair your gear >.>

I'm physical 21 and still have a level 1 weapon. This is the issue with the bazaar/market ward system making it too difficult to locate crafters. The gear is well divided among various professions, and crafting could be rewarding for some players with better distribution channels. Currently the laggy ui makes it less fun, and the lack of distribution (I'm not going to spend 2 hours searching bazaars.) The lack of distribution means what I craft doesn't reach the people who want it.

I would be happy with a bag or seperate tab for crafting tools. If you level 3-4 DoL/DoH classes you can take up a lot of space with main/sub tools.
