    sh!tty laptop is sh!tty

The kid across the street asked me to look at his laptop and I'm not exactly sure what's wrong w/ it. The wifi will connect but no web pages will display and msn ect won't connect. It's REALLY slow.

I'm using a USB drive to bring some programs to it such as CCleaner, malware bytes, spybot, and probably an anti virus to rep his, but just wanted see if anyone knows what the problem may be and it could save me some time of fucking around with it.

He doesn't have a windows CD so not going to be able to reformat atm.

Ping a website now like google, your TCP/IP is in working order.

If you do receive the packets some ISP's have a confirm page you need to go through before allowing someone to view webpages. Ask him if he has some kind of software given to him by his ISP or told to view some website.

You recieved 2 so you can get out to the internet.... hmmm i take it you did the normal hard boot for the router/modem? If it is still acting up that really sounds like something going on with the ISP more than the computer. I could be wrong tho.

Some virus's for some reason turn on proxy server settings on browsers. Check the settings of those and make sure its not using a proxy server.

What version of windows is he using? Also this is a shot in the dark but if he has IPv6 configured sometimes turning that off might help... but thats just a shot in the dark lol.

Edit: Also is he using a firewall/ antivirus like norton, etc.

Make sure to uninstall that shit, and you said you made sure to go Control panel -> internet options -> connections -> LAN settings, then uncheck the box marked "use a proxy server for your LAN". That is normally the problem with this type of stuff 99% of the time. Don't forget to reboot afterwards.

This is a removal tool for getting everything left by Norton even after you uninstall.

This seems to be the second reason for most of these problems, if the above doesn't help, and this doesn't i'm really not sure lol.

I'll give it a shot thanks. This thing seems to be fucked though. Spybot and malwarebytes won't even install. You can see no icons on the desktop and his 244 mb of ram makes this shit a pain in the ass to deal with, so fucking slow. He may just be fucked lol I don't want to mess with this thing anymore

I had something a while ago where I couldn't execute the files for spybot or MB to install them, and copying over the installed files wouldn't allow me to execute the programs either, even after renaming them. I eventually reformatted =/

This is a reg fix for some viruses that stop malware bytes running.

Mighty be worth added to the reg anyway.

    Edit: Source of regfix
