    Toenail question

So several months ago I was playing baseball, misjudged a ball off someones bat and it whacked my big toe. the ball only got half of it and that half has been black and blue
ever since (this shit happened in early March). I haven't touched my toe at all and the nail has stayed bruised, but today I notice that the half of the toenail that'd black and blue is cracked at the bottom of the nail, halfway across.

That half of my toenail is pretty much separated from my toe -- I can lift the bruised side up and everything. Problem is the left half of the toenail is fine and attached. Wtf do I do with this weird half-dead toenail? Neosporin and a band aid? It doesn't hurt and there's no fluid buildup.

I would try to keep it from getting snagged on anything and let it grow out. It takes about six months to completely renew a toenail.

This probably what a doctor would tell you. Either that or the doctor would cut it off for you. Either way, removing that part of the nail will make any pressure on it hurt and you'd have to be sure to clean it every day. Probably best to just let it grow.

Leave it as it is, or pull out your dead toenail. It'll look gross but the exposed nailbead turns into normal flesh after awhile and stops being sensitive, and it's never really painful.

I have lost Big toe nails about 6-7 times. I break the nail plate at the base

A couple things can happen, your new toe nail could grow into the old one causing the new toe nail to grow downwards which will cause a lot of pressure and pain, if that happens then you will have to have both removed.

Or the old one will just grow out and fall off, or you can remove it in the shower when the side of your toe where the nail and the toe are soft.

I currently have a broken toe nail at the base again. I usually just ride it out, but if it starts getting painful, then you have to go to the doctor.

I've also had one get ingrown and infected, so keep it clean.

I've had ingrown nails before, and please take my advice and go see a foot doctor asap. Ingrown nails are incredibly painful and all-around nasty, you don't want it getting to that point. See a doctor, they'll help clean up the nail, make sure nothing's getting infected, and help you treat it if it is before it gets too bad.

    ooooo ur a dirty bitch.

Reminds me when i got my hand caught in a wheelie system at a fast food restaurant i worked at. Anyways my thumb gets busted up pretty good. Crushs my thumbnail. Month later my nail is completely ready to come off. The new one is already growing in under it. Problem tho its still attached by the cuticle. So i decide one day enough of this shit its gross looking. I go into the office pull one of my best friend into the office. Hand him a pair of pliers "rip my thumbnail out". Shit hurt like a bitch. All the girls came into the office to see me writhe in pain for 5 seconds. Then it was over sore for 3 days. And thats about it.

Shit sucks but man up rip it out like a boss.

If I get an ingrown one I'm definitely going to the doctor, but for the time being nothing's started growing in yet (or actually a small portion has, at the very bottom).

I'll definitely keep it covered and cleaned, and avoid tight-fitting shoes.

But just to clarify, because only half of the toenail is the way I described, and because it now appears to be completely separate from the bottom part of the nail bed (vertically, it's still attached to the healthy half of the nail), a healthy nail WILL eventually grow and continue to push the dead part up? I have this painful picture in my head of a new nail growing at the base of the nail and pushing up just the dead part, kind of turning it out 90 degrees or something. But if the entire nail grows evenly from the bottom then it should just be fine, provided I leave it and clip whatever dead nail gets pushed up top, correct?

Have you ever had just half of the toenail dead/bruised? I don't know if that changes anything, it's just weird to look at since half the nail looks normal, and the other half is dead and bruised.

It should regrow and the dead nail will fall away in time, yes. But the nail often doesn't grow in the right direction and that's what causes ingrown nails. Definitely make sure your shoes have plenty of room in them and that you don't wear tight socks or anything like that. It probably wouldn't hurt to soak your foot either to keep the nail malleable and clean, hot water and Epsom salt does the job.

I had the same thing happen with my thumbnail in high school (slammed in a car door), I ended up cutting away the dead section and it regrew eventually. If you cut off the dead part you might see that the nail is already growing back underneath, which is why the dead part is starting to lift up/crack (at least that's what mine did - gross I know). It will look hideous for a while but it should grow back okay. I personally would not keep it covered all the time and definitely do not rip out the whole nail. >.>; ow

If you can stomach some pain you can just go to the doctor and remove the toenail completely. But I'll warn you now, they nail your foot with a few needles inbetween the big toe and next toe to deaden up the nerves. If you don't want to go to the doctor's I suggest neosporin, toenail clippers, and a pair of pliers to rip it out yourself. But you will be in agony. Long story short, go to doctor's if it's bothering you that much. Also your toenail will never grow back the same again.
