So I'm trying to get a bit of research together to write an article and would like your input. I'm posting this questionnaire on several sites and to a variety of WoW players, everyone from casual to hardcore. You can PM me your answers or just repost them below. If you have any friends that are interested in answering, they're more than welcome and can e-mail me their answers to [email protected]


Here's how I would define the following descriptions in this questionnaire. Please note that I am talking only about their TANKING ABILITY not their personality:

Above average tank: Correctly specced. All gear properly gemmed and enchanted with epic gems and highest level or appropriate enchants. Flasks for raids. Proper knowledge of all encounters. Knows when to taunt, use cooldowns, speaks up, just overall knows what they are doing and does a great job.

Average tank: Correctly specced. All gear gemmed and enchanted with a general knowledge of encounters.

Below average tank: Gear is poorly gemmed and enchanted. Barely any knowledge of fights and struggles with fight mechanics. Can't hold threat. Doesn't use proper tank cooldowns.

Awful tank: Gear is either not gemmed nor enchanted. No knowledge of fights. Not defense capped. Incorrect or bad spec. Tanking in DPS gear, etc.

Note: When I say MALE or FEMALE tank I mean the actual person playing the character. A male playing a female character is still a male tank.

b. average -- I have a hard time answering this question since I'm usually (one of) the tanks! But when examining my counterparts, usually they at least are properly geared and can follow instructions decently even if they aren't experienced. So by your definition they'd be average. Though I do see a great many of them who have problems with one or more of the OTHER things you listed that would make them "below average" (threat management and cooldown usage being big ones, the former rears its head when there are no rogues/hunters around, the latter tends to get blamed on healers of course), despite their gear and know-how generally being in the right place...so maybe some grey area between b and c if you wanted to get particular.

2. How many females do you personally know that play WoW?
Not sure what exactly you were looking for here, so I have two different choices:

a. 0-5 -- This is my answer if you mean people I know in ways beyond the game or internet in general, but that also happen to play WoW.
c. 11-15 -- this would be my answer if you are simply looking for "how many people do you know in wow that are girls".

e. Other/Combo (please explain) -- This again depends on which answer you want to question 2; the ones I know personally are all casual players, but the others I know in game play almost every night.

4. Describe the females you know that play tanks as their MAIN spec:
e. Other/Combo (please explain) -- I haven't actually met one yet that played a tank. I'm sure they're out there (and if they're reading this: how you doin'? 8)), just haven't seen one.

5. What general role would you say females play?
d. Other/combo (please explain) -- If you made me pick one I'd say healer, but I tend to see equal numbers of healers and dps; though often times those that dps do so by way of elemental/enhancement shaman or shadow priest so they can get healer and dps in one go.

6. What class do you mostly see females play?

I tend to see these two the most and in roughly equal quantities.

a. 0-5 -- As mentioned, haven't met one yet.

e. 26+ -- Again based on earlier feedback, all of them have been male, most of them tank as their main spec and only dps when they absolutely must (was in a guild for a while in Ulduar with a MT/RL protadin that would have to go ret for Vezax and let the DK do the heavy lifting, he hated it lol )

b. average -- Most of them are still on this average plane with a few falling above and below it, so it tends to even out right about here anyway.

c. paladin -- Much to my own surprise this is the highest concentration among the tanks I know/remember.

I know OF a lot more, but those are the ones in my guild or on my friends list who I interact with nearly every time I log in.

Depends on what you mean by casual/hardcore. A lot of us only raid 9 hours a week in 25s, but most of us are on every day, hours on end, doing other stuff or running 10s. Almost all of us easily play more than 21 hours a week.

Um. I know three tanks, like I said. One is a beartank and generally accepted as one of the best on the realm (though I realize that doesn't mean much, my realm being what it is). Really though, she's excellent.

The second one is one of my guild's main tanks, and also completely excellent at what she does. She's a death knight tank, and is one of three people I blindly trust to tank anything.

The last one is a paladin tank who... well, I wouldn't trust her to tank the squirrel in Dalaran properly. She's horrible.

The only average tanks I've played with has since quit it and are now strictly DPSing, and the bad tanks I run into mostly happens in random dungeons since GHills isn't a pug realm (and I run everything with my guild there anyway).

I play every day, easily more than 4 hours for the highest average, but I don't raid every day. I raid with my guild 9 hours a week in 25s, and then run 10s three or four other nights most weeks - some weeks I'll skip 10s and just go off to do my own thing. Kind of reluctant to select hardcore because even though the hours match, when I think hardcore I think of guilds already having beaten LK25 in HM. Which y'know... lol, my realm. And I don't care enough to transfer off.

When I played, most females I knew were Druids or Priests, although I did see a few hunters. Their skills ranged from average to excellent, and all of them at end-game were excellent in my experience. They were semi-hardcore to hardcore players. If they played a tank, it was paladin.

Men played Paladin or Warrior tanks the most. Men had skills ranging from average to excellent.

I was semi-hardcore: about 12-20 hours a week.
