New XIV build, appreciate your advice

Hello everyone, I'm looking to build a new XIV PC and I'd really appreciate if you could check this setup and let me know your thoughts. My hardware knowledge is intermediate and I've been doing a lot of reading.

But, before investing this kind of money into something, I'd feel more comfortable if you can point out any problem areas or give it the go ahead.

    Case:
    Cooler Master 922 HAF
    Mobo:
    ASUS P6T SE LGA 1366 Intel X58
    GPU: ASUS ROG MATRIX 5870 P/2DIS/2GD5 Radeon HD 5870 Platinum 2GB 256-bit GDDR5
    CPU: Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor
    HDD: Intel X25-M Mainstream | 80GB SSD
    RAM: A-DATA Gaming Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
    PSU: CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-950TX 950W ATX12V v2.3/EPS12V v2.91
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Screen Resolution for XIV: 1680 x 1050

Note: This PC is only being used for FFXIV, all normal PC use will take place on another system sitting next to this.

Q: Does anything stick out to you as a concern? Any suggested changes?

Q: Currently, I do not plan to OC. I'm wondering if the stock cooling and PSU will be OK with this setup?

    Q:
If I do plan to OC in the future, what changes to this setup would you recommend and will my 922 HAF have room?

    Thanks in advance!

That all looks pretty good to me. Even if you aren't planning on overclocking I'd still get an inexpensive aftermarket cooler like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-.../dp/B002G1YPH0

That PSU is more than enough to power what you have (overkill)! With that I'd say you could safely power a 5970 and perhaps another 5870 on top of that.

As Evanos said you should probably replace the stock CPU cooler with something else, because those stock coolers tend to be quite loud and they really do not provide much cooling power. But in stead of what Evanos suggested, I'd invest 20$ more to get Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B or Coolink Corator DS. Those two coolers have gotten magnificent reviews and seem to offer the best value for money when it comes to CPU coolers atm. And they both are definitely good enough if you some day decide to go nuts and OC your CPU like a maniac. Other than that your build looks ready to rock.

I'd recommend looking into a bigger monitor with all that power. (Or maybe 2 more monitors of the same size. :3)

Noone seems to mention it, but FFXIV is designed for Nvidia, so I'd definitely at least consider a GTX460

Yeah, unfortunately as Shidobu said, Nvidia cards aren't really working properly in FFXIV atm. People with OC'd GTX460 1gb are losing in FPS to people with cheap ATI cards like HD5770 easily, which is rather silly. So the players with Nvidia cards (like myself) just have to hope that it's a beta issue.

470 was comparable to the 5850, so a 460 should be somewhere around the 5770, no?

I agree getting at least a 23" monitor with 1920 x 1080 minimum resolution to go with that 5870.

    I would recommend a Dell U2311 or Alienware AW2310.

Actually from the various reviews and comparisons I've read, the GTX460 1024mb is quite close to the HD5850.. where as it offers much better performance than the HD5770 and is quite a bit ahead of HD5830 as well. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/180?vs=164 this is a pretty good site to put 2 different GPUs against each other. But in conclusion, if something like Radeon HD5847 would exist, GTX460 would probably be comparable to that.

Going by those benchmarks I guess I'd put the 460 over the 5770 for sure, but definitely below the 5850 also. However.. 4xAA isn't the only setting people play at and covering only that demographic can easily be misleading.

Given the price the 460 really seems to be a really great card though.

Yeah it sure is, must be one of the best value for money cards atm.

do a google search for "gtx 460 ffxi"

right now the 400 series cards are playing ffxi at single digit fps. until they get the driver sorted out, I wouldn't get one. if you don't plan to keep playing ffxi it's not an issue I guess, but I'd keep it in mind

5770 and 460 are the two best cards for the money, in fact scaling parallel as performance per dollar spent. OP is interested in higher end cards though.

Well fuck, this is what I get for not reading all those FFXIV hardware topics before ordering my rig, but I guess it's hard to suspect something like that when you're looking at so many good reviews for this video card. I seriously hope that they get it fixed it one way or another though, as I'll probably be playing FFXIV mostly, otherwise I've just blown about 220€ into the wind.

Edit. Somehow I didn't notice that you were talking about FFXI, but I guess this is the case for FFXIV as well.

I think XIV is working ok, just not as well as you'd expect and the ati cards are running it nicer.

    XI however =/

I'm putting off building a new rig now specifically because of this.

This galaxy gtx460 super oc i have is better than a 5850(Almost 20fps above in most games from the bechmarks), and is faster than a stock gtx470. 5770 isn't comparable at all. Look up the review, the card just came out not more than a week ago in shelves, read the reviews for it.

Wouldn't be worried about the nvidia issue, it should be resolved by release. Unless SE is THAT stupid to repeat the same mistake from 8 years ago.
