Antibody Discovered To Boost HIV Vaccines

"Scientists have discovered two potent human antibodies that can stop more than 90 percent of known global HIV strains from infecting human cells in the laboratory, and have demonstrated how one of these disease-fighting proteins accomplishes this feat. ... Research efforts to find individual antibodies that can neutralize HIV strains have been difficult because the virus continuously changes its surface proteins to evade recognition by the immune system. As a consequence of these changes, an enormous number of HIV variants exist worldwide. However, there are a few surface areas that remain nearly constant across all variants of HIV and scientists have now discovered two potent human antibodies that attach to one of these sites and can stop more than 90 percent of known global HIV strains from infecting human cells in the laboratory. ... The researchers also confirmed that VRC01 does not bind to human cells — a characteristic that might otherwise lead to its elimination during immune development, a natural mechanism the body employs to prevent autoimmune disease."

Sounds promising. I'll probably end up doing a paper on this soon.

In short, this doesn't mean shit right now. It's one thing to do this in a lab, it's another completely when it's a human's working body. There are far more factors that come into play.

Good job, though, it's about time somebody made some progress.

If I wasn't so sure that pharmacy companies would strike this down since it tanks their cocktail drug business, I would say this was great.

Of course, even if they take to the idea, they will charge more for this treatment than any normal person could afford... and unfortunately it's those that would need it the most.

This prevents infection of the cells, it doesn't cure people who already have been infected. So this is for prevention only.

What you're talking about is an undetectable viral load where the virus exists only inside cells and tissues as HIV provirus, and is not present in the blood stream. There is no known cure yet for HIV. The closest thing is keeping it under control at undetectable levels.

I think that was curing cancer with aids by making the aids virus only attack cancer cells. Maybe?

I believe that the virus also attacks and invades body organs, so you would have to replace everything, which truly is impossible.

And all you succeeded in doing was compounding on what I had already said.

And no, it doesn't invade organs. HIV only retrogrades certain lymphocytes and some other monocytic cells.

I thank you for the clarification, though, Vuitton.

How long and healthy do people with HIV/AIDS live these days, anyway? Other than a very basic understand of how the virus works and spreads, I know very little about it.

As people said, a lesson is learned from Magic Johnson. Your life expectancy with the HIV virus is directly related to how much money you have to throw at it.
