BG Vet: Cat Chews Wires

This is my cat, Adam West:

He likes to chew wires. This is not good in a house with three computers and an entertainment centre.

He has already destroyed several sets of headphones and an ethernet cable.

We tried giving him doggie chew treats but, as you can see, he is a cat. Cats do not like doggie chew treats.

How do I deal with a cat that chews wires that does not include hanging him by destroyed wires?

try looking for some sour apple spray or similar sprays at the pet store, they are meant for just this type of issue. They have a sour taste which should make the cat not want to chew the wires when sprayed with the stuff.

Bitter apple, tabasco, or any "Off" sprays should help. Does the kitty have any scratching posts or toys he could play with when he's bored?

Adam West has a lot of expensive kitty toys to play with, and a scratch pad. Unfortunately, he usually prefers to play with dried balls of his own poop, which he enjoys batting around the hallway.

We'll try the bitter spray and see if that helps. Thank you for the suggestion.

You are a terrible troll. No one responded the first time, why do you think it would work a second time?

I second the bitter spray, it seems to work fairly well. There is also this other spray that doesn't rely on taste but rather is a smell that cats can't stand and they will stay away from any area where you spray it. I forget the name though so I will have to post it when I get home from work.

Try this first, if it doesn't work you can buy tubing to put around the wires so at least if she chews she's chewing the tubing instead of the wire. We had to do this when we had pet rats (we would let them out for fun/exercise), and it worked out really well. Obvious downside is there are certain things you aren't gonna want to tube (mouse wire/headset wire, etc.) but it can help on the big stuff (power cords).

Cats really are useless and unloyal pets, dogs are way better. No cat will protect your house like a dog or let you know when something is going down like someone at the door etc. Useless animal. As for OP, maybe put something non toxic on the wires so when he goes near to smell or chew on them he will be dissuaded.

Actually, both of my cats (Gizmo and Taru) meow at me if they see someone coming to the door through the window and paw at me if someone is at the door itself. And, they follow me around constantly and like to play all the time, so false. Don't be butt hurt because you had a bad experience with a cat

As for the OP's message, I tried the Tabasco thing it and worked for Gizmo.. now he chews on the two mouse toys I bought him. I will admit though, it took him two or three times to get the message, he gave up.

If they chew enough that happens already. My old cat as a kid zapped herself chewing through a lamp cord, she stopped chewing cords after that.

It's pretty normal though, I've had several cats go through controller cords and such, I never really used the spray, I just put my controllers up when I was done using them and put a rug over the exposed wires behind my TV. The spray sounds like the most logical solution, though.

Whatever you do, don't use any bittering agent that has "Tea Tree Oil" in it. Unless you want to slowly kill your cat.

Just treat animals like children, if they do something wrong, smack the shit out of them. My friend tosses his cat arcoss the room when it does something bad, and you know what? It never does it again, and the cat still acts friendly afterwards.
