    Some Linux issues

OK for all our Linux users out there, I wanna try and get Starcraft 2 to run in my VM. This particular VM is running Unbuntu 10.04 and I am having some problems getting it to find my ATI video card.

Now I have heard that "Wine" will allow me to run windows apps in Linux so I'll figure that out later. My main issue is getting this OS to find the video card.

Also I am running Virtual Box as the VM software.

If anyone has some input, please share it.

Since its running in a virtual session, you will most likely need to download drivers from the ati website. As it stands now, starcraft 2 has a platinum rating for use in wine, which is a very good thing. If you've never used wine before to play games, its pretty simple, and if you can figure out linux, you can figure out wine.

You can either use Wine or try VMWare (if it's updated for SC2), whatever you perfer, both should work.

Made the attempt to download the ATI drivers from the site, chose ATI's Linux drivers, then when I attempted to run the file I got this:

You're trying to open a .run file with a text editor.

Virtual machines are designed to use all generic hardware so they can be transported from machine to machine w/o problems. I'm fairly sure you cannot have a virtual machine use an ATI/NVIDIA card, they all use some generic driver instead. I had this problem when trying to install Compiz-Fusion on my CentOS virtual machine. It requires a dedicated GPU which VMWare does not allow.

Virtualbox should have a "install guest additions" option which improves hardware acceleration and such. I'd try that if you haven't already.

because I like working with computers, and it helps me learn the ins and outs of a VM. I had exhausted my trial and error process, and got frustrated, so I went and asked a community for help.

as said above most VM's dont use your actual hardware, so even if you can get the game installed it will not run well if at all.

This is correct. Don't bother trying to install an ATI/Nvidia driver within a VM as it's using it's own generic driver. Even if you were able to, VMs are very limited in 3D graphics that the performance of any modern game will drastically suffer from performance. You're better off running the game via Wine as it actually runs fairly well and it's also running the game via native API rather than emulation. It's not perfect, but playable in my experience. Of course, your mileage may vary as far as performance goes, especially on ATI drivers in Linux.

As far as guest additions goes, it helps hardware performance in terms of display resolutions and being able to easily integrate between the guest OS and host OS. It doesn't help much in game performance. It's mostly to manage mouse/keyboard/display between the host and guest OS easier.

I recommend updating to the latest Dev build of Wine 1.3.3 and installing/running it from there. There's no tweaking, or any type of special configuring involved as far as I'm aware.

edit: The reason you weren't able to run that .run file is because it most likely wasn't executable. You have to chmod or use the GUI to give it executable rights before running it from the command line via: sudo ./ati-driver-installer-etc.run, not that it matters much now though. Just so you know.

    Hope that all helps.
