    ps3 won't obtain ip

k friend of mine has comcast 12mb package
he runs an ethernet cable straight from the modem to his laptop as he is the only one living in the apartment
he wants to start playing ps3 online, so he disconnects his cable from the laptop and puts it on the ps3 but yet it won't connect, i've looked at the settings and everything seems to look fine

i've searched google but most results are wireless problems
anyone seen this issue? maybe it has something to do w/ the modem i'm not sure

You'll have to unplug the modem and let it sit for a decent amount of time (15 minutes should do the trick for the previous connection to time out).

Edit: the below is a possibility too but it seems like it depends on area, I had Comcast in three separate semi major cities and never was MAC locked.

Actually, back when I had comcast they controlled access to their network by MAC address.
Likely the notebook is the only one authorized to pull an IP.
Assuming the modem doesn't have a router on it, what he'd need to do is:
    1) Buy a router
    2) connect the notebook to the router
    3) use the router's management utility to clone the notebook's MAC address

At this point the router should be able to pull an IP and assign internal addresses to the notebook and PS3.
