Nook Vs Kindle

I am looking at getting one of these and from what I can tell neither has a clear advantage over the other. I am most likely going to get the black and white version, unless some out there can tell me if the color versions have comic subscriptions on them.

Anyone have any opinions either way?

And the "color nook" isn't color e-ink, it's just LCD so it will have shitty battery life.

I know this post isn't very helpful, I'm also in the market for an e-reader, and I've just been holding it off this entire time waiting for an obvious good device

I have the black n' white nook and I love it. I know there are people that love the kindle as well. Really it doesn't seem like there's much difference between the two, so I'd go with whatever you can get on sale this season.


I would avoid the colored nook though, as Julian said it's not e-ink which defeats a major part of what's great about an e-reader (being able to read for long hours without hurting your eyes).

I don't own one of these but I've been shopping around to buy one for my mother. I was really impressed with the Kindle. I thought it would be really difficult to see because it's not color but it's really high contrast and easy on the eyes. I liked the interface a bit more than the Nook as well but admittedly I didn't spend much time messing with either. Best Buy had both units so you should probably go there and take a look even if you don't plan on buying from them.

I'm not sure if it's still available, but just 1-2 days ago there were a ton of nooks on sale for $85-90ish (3g version too,) I almost caved and bought one, probably should have, but trying to save money.

I've had a nook since the summer, I love it. I looked at both it and the Kindle at the time and the Nook came out on top for me (I havent looked at the specs of the latest models so my info may be out of date) but what sold me on the Nook over the Kindle was expandable memory, ability to read universal ebook format and not just Amazon's, and the ability to lend ebooks to other Nook users for 2 weeks

Something worth mentioning is how fast page turning is on the Nook with the newest update. I've owned a Nook since February and it was known for being slow compared to a Kindle when turning pages. Comparing it to how fast it turns pages now is like night and day. It still amazes me every time I turn a page how fast it has become.

I have the newest kindle and I really love it. I could look at the screen all day and there isnt any greater eye strain from that than a book would be. Page turning is fast also. I cant say how the Kindle ver 1 and 2 were, but the newest release works like a champ. I got the wifi only version and its a steal at $139 imo.

On topic: The Nook and the Kindle aren't the only two ereaders out there, if you want to use it for more than just reading the latest novels, you might want to shop around more.

I considered this same thing myself awhile back, and ultimately decided to wait until the Kindle DX gets updated like the Kindle 2/3 did.

As for which platform, it seems to me the Kindle has a bigger following, and is therefore more likely to have faster developing "3rd party support" (legit and non-legit), compared to Nook. Much like iphone vs other phones, before there was a standardized platform (e.g. Android) for independent developers to collaborate on. Since there is no such standardization in the e-reader OS market yet, it's pretty much Amazon's game now, marketshare-wise. So, if you have to choose between one proprietary e-reader OS or another, I'd put my bet on Amazon for having the most support. And the hardware ain't shabby, either.

Only reason I say that is, every reader is going to have it's pros and cons, and every reader is going to be missing something. It's just a matter of picking the one that'll have the quickest hacks/patches/workarounds put out by the community to compensate for those shortcomings.
